Modi’s Speech on Division Tactics Misrepresented Through Edited Video

A deceptively edited video clip of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been circulating on social media, falsely suggesting that he admitted his mission is to “divide society and seize power.” A thorough fact-check by Vishvas News has revealed this claim to be entirely false, as the video was deliberately manipulated to remove crucial context.

The edited clip, which has gained significant traction online, was posted by Facebook user Shailendra Pandey on February 12, 2026, with the caption: “Friends, he has only one mission: divide the society, divide and rule. Say loudly, Har Har Moi… The journey from Vishwaguru to Vishguru…”

However, investigation into the original footage tells a completely different story. The unedited video, posted by news agency ANI on October 5, 2024, shows Prime Minister Modi speaking at a rally in Thane, Maharashtra. In the complete address, Modi was actually criticizing the opposition Congress party’s political strategy, not describing his own approach.

In the authentic footage, Modi states: “Congress knows that their vote bank will remain united, but others will easily split. Congress and its allies have only one mission: divide society and seize power. Therefore, our unity must serve as the nation’s shield.”

The manipulated clip strategically removed the reference to “Congress and its allies,” making it appear as though Modi was describing his own political mission. This type of selective editing represents a common form of digital misinformation, where removing context completely inverts the meaning of a statement.

Multiple mainstream news outlets, including ANI, Navbharat Times, Zee News, and Jagran, covered Modi’s speech in October 2024, all confirming that the Prime Minister’s remarks were directed at opposition tactics, not his own agenda.

Shashi Kumar, a member of the BJP’s social media team, also confirmed to Vishvas News that the viral clip was incomplete and misleading. “The viral clip of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is incomplete. The PM had made these comments while targeting the Congress. The viral clip was created by tampering with an old video from a rally in Maharashtra,” Kumar explained.

The spread of such manipulated content highlights the growing challenge of political misinformation on social media platforms. As India’s political landscape remains highly competitive, edited videos and misrepresented statements have become increasingly common weapons in partisan information warfare.

Digital literacy experts warn that such selectively edited clips are particularly dangerous because they contain elements of truth – the Prime Minister did speak these words – but the deliberate removal of context completely changes their meaning.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of misleading political content circulating online, where snippets of speeches are frequently taken out of context to create false narratives that can influence public opinion. Media literacy advocates recommend that viewers always seek out complete speeches and multiple sources before drawing conclusions about political statements.

The Facebook user who posted the misleading clip has over 18,000 followers, indicating the potential reach such manipulated content can achieve. Social media platforms continue to grapple with the challenge of identifying and limiting the spread of such misleading political content without impinging on free speech rights.
