Viral Video of Mayon Volcano’s “Current State” Debunked as AI-Generated Content
As Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 amid intensifying unrest, a misleading video purporting to show its current activity has spread rapidly across social media platforms, garnering over 259,000 views and thousands of shares.
The video, which presents itself as breaking news, shows dramatic footage of an explosive eruption with lava flowing from a crater and pyroclastic materials cascading down the volcano’s slopes. Text overlaid on the footage claims to be a “live update” of Mayon Volcano following a dome collapse.
However, fact-checking efforts have conclusively determined the video to be entirely AI-generated. Two independent AI detection tools confirmed the fabrication, with Hive Moderation flagging both audio and video components as 99.9% likely to be artificially created, while Undetectable AI assigned a 97% probability of AI content.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) elevated Mayon’s alert status to Level 3 on January 6 following the collapse of a lava dome at the volcano’s summit, which produced pyroclastic density currents (PDCs). According to Phivolcs, this heightened alert level indicates an “increased tendency towards a hazardous eruption.”
Recent monitoring shows Mayon’s activity remains concerning. A 100-meter-high lava fountain was observed early Tuesday morning, while officials recorded 209 rockfall events and 46 PDCs throughout the day. These phenomena reflect the ongoing instability of the volcano, which has already forced the evacuation of over 4,000 residents from surrounding areas.
On Sunday, state volcanologists advised residents within the 8-kilometer extended danger zone to prepare for potential evacuation should conditions worsen and trigger an Alert Level 4 declaration.
Mayon’s current unrest is not unprecedented. The volcano was similarly placed under Alert Level 3 in June 2023. As one of the Philippines’ most active stratovolcanoes, Mayon has a long history of eruptions, with its most devastating occurring in 1814. That catastrophic Plinian eruption—the most violent classification—killed more than 1,200 people and destroyed the historic Cagsawa church, leaving behind ruins that now stand as a somber tourist attraction.
