Fact Check: Viral Videos Claiming Iran Attack on Israeli Dimona Nuclear Facility Debunked

Earlier this month, Iran threatened to target the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Centre near Dimona, Israel, should the ongoing conflict continue. Following this threat, several videos purportedly showing an attack on the facility have gone viral across social media platforms.

An investigation into these claims has revealed that the widely circulated videos do not depict any attack on Israel’s Dimona nuclear facility. In fact, no credible reports have emerged confirming such an attack has taken place.

Two videos in particular have gained significant traction online. The first shows a massive explosion at what appears to be an industrial facility, with plumes of fire and smoke billowing into the sky. Social media users shared this footage with captions claiming, “Iran is shelling the Dimona nuclear reactor in the Negev. Iran has crossed the red lines following the bombing of the space science centre in Tehran.”

However, a reverse image search of key frames from this video traced the footage back to June 21, 2019. The explosion actually occurred at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery on the East Coast of the United States—an incident that was widely reported by major news outlets including CNBC at the time.

Local news reports from 2019 confirm that the Philadelphia refinery explosion was so powerful that it shook homes as far away as South New Jersey. The facility, which was the longest continuously operating refinery on the U.S. East Coast, suffered significant damage in the incident.

The second viral video depicts smoke and fire emerging from three chimneys at what resembles a nuclear power plant, with flames visible in the background. This video has been shared with the caption, “Iran targets the Dimona nuclear reactor in Israel.”

Several visual inconsistencies immediately raise red flags about this footage. The smoke emerges with unnatural uniformity from the three chimneys, which themselves appear completely undamaged despite the supposed attack. The fire, while visually dramatic, doesn’t spread in a manner consistent with an actual missile strike or bombing.

When subjected to analysis using Hive Moderation, an AI-detection tool, the video was flagged as synthetic with 98.1 percent certainty. The assessment confirms what visual analysis suggests—this is almost certainly an artificially generated video rather than authentic footage.

The circulation of these false videos comes at a particularly sensitive time in the Middle East. Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated significantly in recent months, with both sides exchanging threats of potential strikes against strategic targets.

The Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Centre holds particular significance as it is widely believed to be central to Israel’s undeclared nuclear weapons program, though Israel maintains a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding nuclear capabilities.

Military analysts note that an actual attack on a nuclear facility would represent a major escalation in the ongoing conflict and would likely trigger an immediate and substantial military response. Such an incident would also dominate international headlines and prompt emergency meetings of global security bodies.

The spread of misinformation through manipulated or misattributed videos has become increasingly common during international conflicts, complicating efforts to accurately assess developments on the ground. Social media platforms have struggled to effectively combat the rapid spread of such content, which can contribute to heightened tensions and misunderstandings about actual events.

As regional tensions remain high, verification of claims through multiple reliable sources becomes increasingly important before accepting reports of significant military actions.
