Debunked: Viral Video Does Not Show Iranian Forces Capturing US Pilot

A video circulating across social media platforms since April 4, 2026, purportedly showing Iranian forces capturing an American pilot after shooting down a US F15E fighter jet, has been verified as false by fact-checking organization iVerify Pakistan.

The video, which collectively garnered millions of views across Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), actually shows a Libyan soldier performing a parachute jump despite having a broken leg, and was originally shared by Libyan media outlet Fawasel Media on March 2, 2026 – predating the claimed incident by more than a month.

The viral footage emerged in the context of heightened tensions in the Middle East conflict, now in its 35th day with no signs of de-escalation. The war began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel conducted coordinated airstrikes targeting Iran’s military infrastructure, including missile systems and nuclear facilities. This marked a significant escalation in regional tensions following a period of instability.

The timing of the video’s spread appears connected to an April 3 claim by Iranian state media that the country’s forces had shot down a US jet over its southern region. The US later confirmed it had rescued two of its pilots from Iran.

Multiple social media accounts with pro-Iranian affiliations subsequently shared the video with captions such as “Breaking: Watch the moment the American pilot was taken captive” and “Urgent: Watch the moment of the capture of the American pilot.” One particularly inflammatory post included text suggesting the captured pilot would “be returned to them, not as he came but carried on a missile of their making.”

Through reverse image search technology and keyword analysis, fact-checkers at iVerify Pakistan identified the original source of the footage. The investigation uncovered a second video of the same event from a different angle, posted to Instagram on March 2, 2026, with the caption: “A scene of unwavering will: a free jump despite a broken leg. Such are the men of our nation, the heroes of the Libyan Arab Army.”

Visual comparison between the viral clip and the original footage revealed identical elements, including a distinctive black-and-white striped flag, the same parachute with visible holes in its canopy, and evidence of the soldier’s broken leg visible at the 10-second mark of the original video.

Further keyword searches confirmed the absence of any credible reporting from mainstream international, American, or Iranian media outlets regarding the capture of a US pilot. Instead, established news organizations including The New York Times, BBC, and NBC News reported that the US had successfully rescued both crew members of the F-15E fighter jet that had been shot down over Iran.

This incident highlights the rapid spread of misinformation during international conflicts, with the false claim accumulating over 10 million combined views across various social media platforms in just a few days. The war in the Middle East continues to be a flashpoint for information warfare, with narratives being shaped and distorted across digital platforms.

The fact-check was conducted by iVerify Pakistan, a joint project of the Centre for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration (CEJ-IBA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
