Ghislaine Maxwell invoked her Fifth Amendment rights during a recent Congressional hearing on Jeffrey Epstein, refusing to answer questions about her involvement in his sex trafficking network. Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year prison sentence, appeared before lawmakers but declined to provide testimony about her convicted role in exploiting underage girls.
The British former socialite first met Epstein in the early 1990s, according to documents that became public last year. Their meeting occurred shortly after the death of Maxwell’s father, Robert Maxwell, the British newspaper magnate who was later discovered to have defrauded his companies of hundreds of millions of pounds in a notorious financial scandal.
According to Epstein’s own memo, their relationship “became intimate” and continued for several years throughout the 1990s. Though their romantic involvement apparently ended by the 2000s, they maintained a close friendship and business relationship that would later be revealed as deeply criminal in nature.
In 2021, Maxwell was unanimously convicted for what prosecutors described as “her role in a scheme to sexually exploit and abuse multiple minor girls with Jeffrey Epstein over the course of a decade.” The U.S. Department of Justice successfully demonstrated that between approximately 1994 and 2004, Maxwell actively helped Epstein “recruit, groom, and ultimately abuse victims” they knew were under 18, with some as young as 14.
Prosecutors detailed Maxwell’s methodical approach to gaining victims’ trust. She would befriend vulnerable teenagers by expressing interest in their lives, schools, and families, sometimes taking them shopping or to movies. Maxwell normalized sexual abuse by discussing explicit topics with victims, undressing in front of them, being present while they were undressed, and encouraging them to give Epstein massages. Court documents revealed that “in some instances,” Maxwell personally “participated in the sexual abuse of minor victims.”
The criminal operation specifically targeted “vulnerable girls” from “single-mother households and difficult financial circumstances,” according to Justice Department filings. Maxwell and Epstein refined their predatory system over time, eventually paying victims “hundreds of dollars” after forcing them to engage in sex acts with Epstein. To expand their operation, they paid certain victims to recruit additional girls, creating what prosecutors called “a network of underage victims for Epstein to sexually exploit.”
Maxwell’s connections to former British royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor have remained under intense scrutiny. She introduced him to Epstein in 1999, during the period when Maxwell and Epstein were actively abusing minors. At that time, neither had been convicted of any crimes.
Maxwell appears in a now-infamous 2001 photograph showing the former prince with his arm around Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who later alleged in a 2014 lawsuit that Maxwell and Epstein transported her from the U.S. to London in 2001 to have sex with the Duke of York when she was 17. While the age of consent in the UK was 16, such an arrangement would have constituted sex trafficking under U.S. law.
Mountbatten-Windsor consistently denied meeting Roberts Giuffre and suggested during a 2019 BBC Newsnight interview that the widely-circulated photograph might have been doctored. Maxwell similarly told Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in 2025 that she believed it was “literally a fake photo.”
However, government-released emails have contradicted these denials. One message sent by “G Maxwell” to Epstein in 2015 stated: “In 2001 I was in London when [redacted] met a number of friends of mine including Prince Andrew. A photograph was taken as I imagine she wanted to show it to friends and family.” The redacted name is understood to refer to Virginia Roberts Giuffre.
In 2021, Roberts Giuffre filed a lawsuit against Mountbatten-Windsor in the U.S., accusing him of “sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress.” They settled out of court the following year without any admission of liability, though the former prince paid an undisclosed sum reportedly worth £12 million. In a statement, he acknowledged that Epstein had “trafficked countless young girls” and expressed regret for his association with the convicted sex offender.
According to reports, Virginia Roberts Giuffre died by suicide in 2025, adding a tragic final chapter to a case that exposed connections between wealth, power, and systemic sexual exploitation.
