The alarming viral video claiming an intelligence report predicts BJP’s defeat in Assam has been exposed as a sophisticated deepfake, according to a forensic investigation by Vishvas News.

The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, purportedly shows an Aaj Tak news bulletin reporting that a leaked intelligence assessment forecasts significant electoral losses for the BJP in the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The clip further suggested that a leadership change might be considered for current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as a damage control measure.

After a comprehensive technical analysis, fact-checkers have confirmed the video is an elaborate fake. The investigation revealed that while the visual components featuring Aaj Tak anchor Rajeev Dhoundiyal are authentic, the audio has been artificially generated and superimposed on the genuine news footage.

Multiple advanced deepfake detection tools confirmed the deceptive nature of the content. Swiss deeptech company Aurigin.AI’s analysis showed the entire 40-second audio track was AI-generated with a 100% confidence score. Additional verification from the Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU), along with tools like Hive Audio and HIYA, reinforced these findings.

“This represents a concerning evolution in political disinformation tactics,” said a digital forensics expert who was not involved in the investigation. “Manipulating authentic news footage with AI-generated audio creates particularly convincing false narratives that can rapidly influence public perception.”

The fake bulletin gained significant traction when shared by social media user ‘sourav_kundu14’ and was subsequently amplified by an X (formerly Twitter) account called “India With Congress.” This demonstrates how such sophisticated fakes can quickly spread across platforms and potentially impact political discourse.

The timing of the deepfake is particularly noteworthy, as the Assam Legislative Assembly’s current term ends in May 2026, with elections expected to be announced in late February or early March. Assam’s 126 assembly seats will be contested in an election that has already seen heightened political activity across the northeastern state.

Political analysts note that such disinformation campaigns tend to intensify as elections approach. “The use of AI to create false narratives attributed to trusted news sources represents a significant escalation in the sophistication of political misinformation,” said a political communication researcher from a leading Indian university.

Election officials have increasingly expressed concern about the role deepfakes might play in the upcoming electoral cycle. The Election Commission of India has previously warned about the potential for such technology to undermine democratic processes.

For voters, the incident highlights the growing importance of critical media consumption. Digital literacy experts recommend verifying news through official channels, being skeptical of politically charged content that lacks attribution to official news websites, and using fact-checking resources before sharing sensational political claims.

As campaigning for the 2026 Assam elections intensifies, authorities are expected to remain vigilant against similar sophisticated disinformation attempts that could potentially influence voter sentiment or create false political narratives.
