AI-Generated Photos Falsely Link NYC Mayor Mamdani to Jeffrey Epstein
Fabricated AI-generated images circulated widely on social media Monday, falsely purporting to show New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a child alongside his mother, acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, with Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and several high-profile public figures.
The manipulated photos emerged shortly after the Justice Department released a substantial collection of new Epstein-related documents last Friday. Despite being clearly watermarked as AI-generated content and containing numerous inconsistencies, the images gained significant traction online.
The fabricated photos first appeared on a self-described parody account on X (formerly Twitter) that explicitly states it creates “high quality AI videos and memes.” The account bills itself as “an AI-powered meme engine” that uses artificial intelligence to produce provocative content “fast, loud, and impossible to ignore.”
When subjected to analysis through Google’s Gemini app, all the images were confirmed to contain SynthID watermarks – a digital fingerprinting tool specifically designed to identify content generated or altered by Google’s AI systems.
One particularly widespread image depicts Mamdani as a preteen alongside Nair in a group photo with Maxwell, Epstein, former President Bill Clinton, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, apparently posing on a crowded city street at night. Another fabricated photo shows a similar grouping in what appears to be a tropical setting, with Epstein holding Clinton in his arms and Maxwell placing her arm around a younger-looking Mamdani.
Additional AI-generated images show Mamdani as an infant being held by Nair while posing with Epstein, Clinton, Maxwell, and Bezos. It’s important to note that none of Epstein’s victims have publicly implicated Clinton, Gates, or Bezos in the disgraced financier’s criminal activities.
The timing of these fabricated images appears deliberate, following the recent emergence of an email in which publicist Peggy Siegal mentioned seeing various public figures – including Clinton, Bezos, and Nair – at a 2009 film afterparty hosted at Maxwell’s townhouse.
However, the timeline represented in the AI-generated images doesn’t align with reality. While Mamdani appears as a baby or young child in the fabricated photos, he would have been approximately 18 years old in 2009 when Nair reportedly attended the party mentioned in Siegal’s email.
The false images have spawned additional misinformation, including baseless claims that Epstein was Mamdani’s father. In reality, Mamdani’s father is Mahmood Mamdani, a respected anthropology professor at Columbia University.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of AI-generated misinformation in the political sphere. As image generation technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, the potential for fabricated content to spread rapidly through social media platforms presents significant concerns for public figures and voters alike.
Media literacy experts emphasize the importance of scrutinizing unusual or provocative images, particularly those involving public figures, for telltale signs of AI manipulation such as unusual lighting, inconsistent shadows, strange hand renderings, or chronological impossibilities.
The circulation of these images also underscores the critical need for robust content verification protocols on social media platforms, especially as elections approach and the potential impact of manufactured visual misinformation becomes increasingly consequential.

This is a concerning example of how AI can be misused to create misleading and potentially damaging content. I’m glad the images were quickly identified as synthetically generated and not real. We need to be vigilant about verifying the authenticity of online content, especially in sensitive political contexts.
The use of AI to fabricate images is troubling, as it can be leveraged to spread falsehoods and undermine trust. I appreciate the fact-checking work done to expose these manipulated photos as inauthentic. Maintaining the integrity of information is crucial, especially around high-profile political figures.
While the technology behind these AI-generated images is impressive, the intent to mislead is deeply concerning. I hope the authorities can identify the source and motivations behind this disinformation campaign. Fact-checking and transparency are essential to combat the spread of synthetic content.
Interesting to see these AI-generated images falsely linking the mayor to Epstein. The fabricated nature of the content is concerning, as it could be used to spread disinformation. I hope the authorities can get to the bottom of who is behind this.
It’s alarming to see how AI can be exploited to create false narratives and undermine trust in public figures. I’m glad the Justice Department is taking this issue seriously and working to expose the origins of these fabricated photos. Maintaining the credibility of our institutions is vital for a healthy democracy.
