The claim that lawyer Kristina Conti possesses insider information about judges’ decisions in former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s International Criminal Court case has been debunked as false.

A viral social media post, which garnered over 1,000 reactions and hundreds of comments, suggested that Conti, who represents victims of Duterte’s controversial war on drugs, held “significant influence” over the ICC’s ruling. The post featured a manipulated image showing Conti holding a document stamped with the word “Guilty” alongside photos of ICC judges.

Conti directly addressed these allegations in a March 5 Facebook post, stating: “I strongly deny that I have any advance or insider information on the judges’ decisions, or the parties’ filings or submissions outside of publicly-disclosed information.” She clarified that while she is knowledgeable about ICC procedures, she has no privileged access to the court’s decision-making process.

Digital forensic analysis confirmed the fraudulent nature of the image. AI detection tools identified the photo of Conti holding the supposed guilty verdict as artificially generated, with one tool estimating an 85.6% probability of AI manipulation. Technical assessment suggested the image was likely created using advanced AI models from Google, including Gemini3.

The circulation of this misinformation comes at a sensitive moment in the legal proceedings against Duterte, who was arrested on March 11, 2025, and is currently detained at an ICC facility in The Hague, Netherlands. The former president faces charges of crimes against humanity related to his administration’s brutal anti-drug campaign, which human rights organizations report resulted in over 30,000 deaths, including children and civilians.

Duterte’s pre-trial hearing was conducted over four days in late February, with judges expected to deliver their written decision within 60 days. The court will determine whether to confirm the charges based on sufficient evidence, decline due to insufficient evidence, or request additional investigation.

As one of the legal representatives for victims of the drug war, Conti has expressed confidence in the prosecution’s case. In a statement to GMA News, she noted: “We are now at the confirmation of charges hearing stage, which is seeking substantial evidence that exists. It is clear that there is a basis for the charges.”

The ICC case represents a significant moment in international human rights law, as it examines accountability for state-sponsored violence during Duterte’s presidency. His administration’s drug war became notorious for its brutality, with widespread allegations of extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation surrounding high-profile legal cases, particularly those with political implications. The fabricated image and false claims about insider influence attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the legal proceedings by suggesting improper influence or predetermined outcomes.

As the judicial process continues, the ICC’s independent assessment of the evidence will determine whether the case advances to a full trial, where Duterte would face formal prosecution for crimes against humanity.
