In a case of digital misinformation targeting communal sensitivities, a video circulating on social media purporting to show Hindu celebrants dancing with saffron flags in front of a mosque in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar during Eid-ul-Fitr has been debunked by fact-checkers.

The investigation revealed that the footage was actually filmed in Raichur, Karnataka, and has been online since at least 2024 – predating the claimed Eid celebrations by a significant margin.

Delhi’s Uttam Nagar has been under heightened security following a violent clash during Holi celebrations that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Tarun and sparked communal tensions in the area. The Delhi High Court had specifically directed police and civil administration to ensure safety during subsequent religious observances, making the area particularly sensitive to inflammatory content.

The video began circulating widely after an X (formerly Twitter) user shared it with the provocative caption: “This is Uttam Nagar scenes on Eid! Well done, Hindus of Uttam Nagar.” The post appeared designed to inflame tensions by suggesting Hindus were demonstrating in front of a mosque during the Muslim holiday.

Forensic digital analysis conducted by India Today’s Fact Check team traced the video to its original source – an Instagram post from September 2023 that identified the footage as being from Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, not Eid. Additional investigation uncovered similar videos from the same location shared by multiple Instagram users between 2023 and 2025.

The definitive evidence came from visual elements within the video itself. A board visible at the mosque’s entrance identifies it as the Osmania Masjid in Raichur, Karnataka. This was further confirmed through Google Maps Street View comparisons that matched architectural features of the building and surrounding area to the southern Indian city, not Delhi.

“The geographical and temporal misrepresentation of the video is particularly concerning given the recent history of communal tension in Uttam Nagar,” noted a social media analyst who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic. “This is a textbook example of how old content can be reframed and weaponized during sensitive periods.”

Media reports actually paint a different picture of the Eid celebrations in Uttam Nagar this year. According to Hindustan Times, rather than facing confrontation, Muslims in the area showed appreciation to police for ensuring their safety during prayers, with some community members showering officers with flower petals.

This incident highlights the persistent challenge of misinformation on social media platforms, particularly content designed to exploit religious tensions. Digital literacy experts emphasize the importance of verifying the source, timing, and location of viral content before sharing, especially during sensitive religious observances when communities may already be on edge.

Law enforcement agencies across India have increasingly prioritized monitoring social media for such misleading content that could potentially trigger unrest, with many jurisdictions establishing dedicated cyber units to counter digital misinformation.

The mischaracterized video serves as a reminder of how easily context can be stripped from digital content and repurposed to serve divisive narratives, underscoring the critical importance of fact-checking and responsible sharing practices on social platforms.
