In an era of sophisticated disinformation, a false claim targeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emerged, alleging he misappropriated €550 million in government funds to construct a private “doomsday” aircraft. The allegation, which lacks any credible evidence, appears to be part of a coordinated disinformation campaign.

The claim first appeared on March 18, 2026, when a social media account using the handle @SprinterPress posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Allegations suggest Merz is using German state funds to turn a Boeing 747 into a fortified air refuge for himself and his associates, as precaution against a potential global nuclear war from events such as the attack on Iran.”

The post linked to an article titled “Merz’s new DOOMSDAY Plane” on a website called Euinfo.net. However, digital forensics reveal the website was registered just one day before publishing the story, raising immediate red flags about its credibility and intentions.

Further investigation shows that the article’s supposed author, “Philippe Jacqué,” has no other publications on the site. While there is a legitimate journalist by that name working for the respected French newspaper Le Monde, it would be highly unusual for such a professional to contribute to an obscure, newly-established website.

Technical analysis of the video accompanying the false claim yielded additional evidence of fabrication. The Hive Moderation AI-Generated Content Detection tool rated the video as “likely to be AI-Generated” with a near-perfect score of 99.9%, indicating sophisticated artificial intelligence was likely used to create the deceptive content.

Security experts have noted similarities between this disinformation effort and previously identified Russian-backed propaganda campaigns known as “Storm-1516” and “Matryoshka.” These operations typically target Western leaders with unfounded allegations of corruption and personal enrichment, using AI-generated content and impersonating legitimate news organizations.

The tactics employed in this case mirror those documented in an October 2024 report by Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub, which exposed the actors behind Storm-1516. That campaign became notorious for spreading numerous high-profile hoaxes targeting Democratic candidates during the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

This incident is not isolated. Fact-checkers have previously debunked similar fabricated claims, including one alleging Germany was preparing to accept 400,000 Palestinian refugees – another piece of disinformation bearing the hallmarks of the same influence operation.

The fabricated story about Chancellor Merz’s supposed “doomsday plane” appears designed to erode public trust in German leadership and potentially inflame domestic political tensions. It represents a sophisticated evolution in disinformation tactics, combining AI-generated content, fake news websites, and social media distribution channels to maximize impact and believability.

As international tensions remain high, particularly regarding conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, security analysts warn that such disinformation campaigns are likely to increase in both frequency and sophistication. Experts recommend heightened vigilance from the public when encountering sensational political claims, particularly those appearing on unfamiliar news sources or making extraordinary allegations without substantial evidence.

For citizens seeking to verify information, basic due diligence – such as checking a website’s registration date, looking for corroboration from established news organizations, and being skeptical of single-source claims – remains an essential defense against the growing threat of coordinated disinformation.
