Trump Immigration Policies Cast Shadow Over 2026 World Cup Preparations

“This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase the beauty and the greatness of America. And we can’t wait to welcome soccer fans from all over the globe.” This statement by US President Donald Trump appears prominently on the US government’s official visa-information page for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Yet this message of welcome stands in stark contrast to the broader policy landscape defining Trump’s second term. Intensified immigration enforcement, restrictions, and deportation raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have become hallmarks of his administration.

“This is a difficult time in this country because a lot of things that are happening are extremely unusual,” says Daniel Kanstroom, professor at Boston College Law School. “We are seeing examples of ICE agents who appear to be overstepping their authority in some cases.”

The United States is set to host approximately 78 of the tournament’s 104 matches, with the remainder taking place in co-hosts Canada and Mexico. As preparations continue, social media has erupted with claims that thousands of fans are canceling tickets out of fear of immigration enforcement—allegations that appear to be unfounded.

Ticket Cancellation Claims Lack Evidence

Despite viral social media posts suggesting that between 16,800 and 25,000 people have canceled their World Cup tickets, no official data supports these claims. FIFA reports receiving more than 500 million ticket applications during the latest random selection draw, with over one million tickets already sold during the Visa presale phase.

When questioned directly about the cancellation claims, FIFA declined specific comment, instead directing inquiries to its latest media release, which reiterates that tickets should only be purchased through official platforms.

ICE Enforcement and Fan Concerns

Public anxiety has grown as ICE continues conducting large-scale operations targeting undocumented migrants. The agency’s budget and enforcement authority have expanded significantly under Trump’s second term, making it central to his administration’s immigration crackdown.

Some social media posts have suggested ICE could identify, detain, or deport fans attending the tournament. However, experts consider this scenario highly unlikely.

“I do not expect ICE would be involved in this,” Kanstroom told DW. “The administration would not want to signal that ICE agents are targeting fans who have legally been admitted into the country. The scenario of fans being jailed seems to be extremely, extremely unlikely.”

According to information from the US Department of Justice, security at major stadium events is primarily handled by local and state law enforcement, with federal agencies providing intelligence and coordination rather than frontline enforcement.

Visa Policies and International Fan Access

Confusion has also spread regarding visa access for international fans. Claims that Brazilian fans would be unable to attend due to visa restrictions have proven false. While the Trump administration has paused immigration visa processing—affecting those seeking permanent residence—from 75 countries including Brazil, Colombia, and Egypt, this does not impact short-term visas for travel and tourism.

“A Brazilian national can still interview for a tourist visa to the United States that would allow them to attend the World Cup,” explained Eryne Hanlon, a US immigration lawyer based in London and New York.

The State Department has created a dedicated World Cup 2026 visa-information page with specific instructions for Brazilian applicants and others. Brazil, the most successful team in World Cup history with five championships, remains among the top nations for ticket registrations.

However, Trump’s previously imposed travel ban on 19 countries will affect fans from four World Cup-participating nations: Iran, Haiti, Senegal, and Ivory Coast.

“Iranian fans who are solely Iranian nationals will not be able to attend,” Hanlon noted. “If they are dual nationals and their other nationality is not on the list, they can attend.” Athletes, coaches, and essential tournament personnel are exempt from this ban.

As preparations for the world’s biggest sporting event continue, the contrast between welcoming international visitors and restrictive immigration policies presents a unique challenge for tournament organizers and a potential source of ongoing tension as the 2026 World Cup approaches.
