The US military has refuted claims made by an Iran-backed militia group that it shot down a KC-135 refueling aircraft in Iraq, stating that while an aircraft did have a landing mishap, no hostile fire was involved in the incident.

The controversy erupted after social media accounts affiliated with Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq circulated videos claiming to show an American KC-135 Stratotanker being targeted and crashing in Iraq’s western Anbar province on Monday. The militia groups asserted that they had successfully conducted an attack on the U.S. military aircraft.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) quickly responded to these assertions, confirming that a U.S. military aircraft had indeed experienced a landing incident at Al Asad Air Base in western Iraq. However, CENTCOM categorically denied that the aircraft had been subjected to any form of hostile fire.

“Initial indications are that there was no hostile fire involved,” CENTCOM stated in an official release. Military officials added that the incident resulted in no casualties, though the aircraft sustained some damage during the landing.

The KC-135 Stratotanker serves as a crucial aerial refueling platform for the U.S. Air Force, enabling extended flight operations for combat aircraft. The presence of these tankers in Iraq underscores the ongoing U.S. military operations in the region, primarily focused on counter-terrorism efforts against ISIS remnants.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East following the outbreak of conflict in Gaza last October. Since then, Iranian-backed militias operating under the umbrella known as the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” have conducted approximately 170 attacks against U.S. forces stationed in Iraq and Syria.

Security analysts note that these militia groups frequently issue exaggerated or false claims about attacks on U.S. assets to bolster their image among supporters and demonstrate their opposition to American military presence in the region.

“These militias operate in an information environment where perception is often as important as reality,” said Dr. Michael Knights, a military affairs specialist at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “Claiming successful attacks against high-value U.S. assets serves their propaganda purposes, regardless of the factual accuracy.”

The United States maintains approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq and about 900 in neighboring Syria as part of the ongoing mission to ensure ISIS cannot reconstitute itself in the region. This military footprint has made U.S. forces a target for Iran-backed groups seeking to pressure Washington to withdraw from the Middle East.

Iraqi government officials have found themselves in a difficult position, attempting to maintain relations with both the United States and Iran. The Iraqi government has repeatedly condemned attacks on U.S. forces while also facing internal pressure from pro-Iranian factions within its political system.

Earlier this year, three U.S. service members were killed in a drone attack on a base in Jordan, which the Pentagon attributed to Iran-backed militias. That attack prompted retaliatory U.S. strikes against militia positions in both Iraq and Syria.

The Al Asad Air Base, where the KC-135 incident occurred, has been a focal point of Iran-aligned militia attacks in the past. In January 2020, the base was struck by Iranian ballistic missiles in retaliation for the U.S. killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, resulting in traumatic brain injuries to numerous American personnel.

Military aviation experts point out that landing mishaps involving large aircraft like the KC-135 are not uncommon, particularly in austere operating environments with challenging conditions such as those in Iraq.

As tensions persist throughout the region, military analysts predict that Iranian-backed groups will continue their campaign against U.S. forces while attempting to amplify their successes through strategic information operations and propaganda.

The Pentagon has indicated that a full investigation into the KC-135 landing incident is underway to determine the exact cause and extent of the damage to the aircraft.
