The Guardians of Truth: Inside MindaNews’ Fact-Checking Mission
In an era where misinformation spreads at unprecedented speed, independent journalists shoulder the crucial responsibility of presenting accurate information to the public. For more than two decades, MindaNews has been at the forefront of this battle in the Philippines’ southern region, where false narratives have long shaped public perception.
“As independent journalists, our primordial duty is to tell the truth and present facts to help the public discern issues and concerns impacting their lives,” states the MindaNews team, which has implemented a structured fact-checking system to combat false information.
The organization employs a clear rating system for evaluating claims. Content is labeled “FAKE” when completely invented, “FALSE” when it contradicts established facts or official records, “MISLEADING” when based on truth but maliciously twisted, “ALTERED” for manipulated images or videos, and “MISSING CONTEXT” when claims require additional clarification.
Founded in 2001, MindaNews was established specifically to counter misinformation about Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest island group. This region has long been subject to stereotyping and misrepresentation in national media, particularly regarding its diverse cultural landscape and complex sociopolitical challenges.
“MindaNews was founded by reporters precisely to ensure that reports about Mindanao, an island grouping that has suffered misinformation and disinformation long before these words became fashionable, are accurate,” the organization explains.
While fact-checking has always been central to the organization’s journalistic practice, MindaNews formalized its verification initiative in October 2021 through Internews’ Philippine Fact-Checker Incubator project. Internews, a global non-profit supporting independent media in over 100 countries, provided the framework for developing a more systematic approach to combating false information.
The organization’s fact-checking credentials extend beyond its own initiatives. MindaNews co-founded Tsek.ph, a collaborative effort among Philippine media organizations to fight misinformation during the 2019 and 2022 national elections. This cooperation between competing news outlets demonstrates the gravity with which Philippine journalists view the threat of disinformation to democratic processes.
Financial independence is critical to MindaNews’ credibility. The organization sustains its operations primarily through subscriptions to its news service and book sales. While it does receive grants from non-governmental organizations, MindaNews maintains strict editorial independence.
“MindaNews does not accept funds from politicians or domestic or foreign states for its fact-checking initiative,” the organization states, emphasizing its commitment to remaining free from political influence. Its fact-checking work has been supported by Internews and the International Fact-Checking Network’s BUILD grant program.
For other operational aspects, MindaNews has received funding from the National Endowment for Democracy and UNESCO, which has supported coverage, staff compensation, training programs for journalists, and administrative expenses. The organization’s policy prohibits funders from interfering in editorial decisions.
Community engagement plays a vital role in MindaNews’ fact-checking process. The organization actively encourages public participation by soliciting leads for potential verification stories. This collaborative approach recognizes that combating misinformation requires collective effort beyond the newsroom.
“MindaNews welcomes leads or suggestions from the public to potential fact check pieces,” the organization states in its reports, reinforcing the idea that fact-checking is a shared responsibility between journalists and citizens.
As disinformation continues to challenge media landscapes worldwide, MindaNews’ approach offers valuable insights for regional news organizations seeking to establish credible fact-checking operations. By combining rigorous verification methods with community involvement and financial independence, the organization demonstrates how local media can effectively counter false narratives while maintaining journalistic integrity.
