Founded in 2001, MindaNews was established specifically to counter misinformation about Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest island group. “MindaNews was founded by reporters precisely to ensure that reports about Mindanao, an island grouping that has suffered misinformation and disinformation long before these words became fashionable, are accurate,” the organization explains.

While fact-checking has always been central to the organization’s journalistic practice, MindaNews formalized its verification initiative in October 2021 through Internews’ Philippine Fact-Checker Incubator project. Internews, a global non-profit supporting independent media in over 100 countries, provided the framework for developing a more systematic approach to combating false information.

The organization’s fact-checking credentials extend beyond its own initiatives. MindaNews co-founded Tsek.ph, a collaborative effort among Philippine media organizations to fight misinformation during the 2019 and 2022 national elections. Financial independence is critical to MindaNews’ credibility. The organization sustains its operations primarily through subscriptions to its news service and book sales. While it does receive grants from non-governmental organizations, MindaNews maintains strict editorial independence.

“MindaNews does not accept funds from politicians or domestic or foreign states for its fact-checking initiative,” the organization states, emphasizing its commitment to remaining free from political influence. Its fact-checking work has been supported by Internews and the International Fact-Checking Network’s BUILD grant program.

For other operational aspects, MindaNews has received funding from the National Endowment for Democracy and UNESCO, which has supported coverage, staff compensation, training programs for journalists, and administrative expenses. The organization’s policy prohibits funders from interfering in editorial decisions.
