In an era of rampant misinformation, the role of fact-checking has become increasingly vital to preserving journalistic integrity. Independent news organization MindaNews has positioned itself as a frontline defender of truth in the Philippines, particularly for the Mindanao region, which has long been subject to misrepresentation in mainstream media.

MindaNews employs a systematic approach to evaluating dubious claims, categorizing them across a spectrum of accuracy. Claims completely fabricated are labeled as “FAKE,” while those contradicting established facts, events, or official records receive a “FALSE” designation. Information that contains elements of truth but has been manipulated to create misleading impressions earns a “MISLEADING” tag. The organization also identifies “ALTERED” content—manipulated images or videos designed to deceive—and flags content requiring additional explanation as “MISSING CONTEXT.”

Since its founding in 2001, MindaNews has dedicated itself to accurate reporting about Mindanao, an island grouping that has suffered from misinformation long before the term became commonplace in public discourse. The organization was established by journalists specifically to counter misrepresentations about the region.

“Our policy has always been to ensure that reports are thoroughly vetted before they are dispatched and uploaded on our website,” the organization states, emphasizing its commitment to factual accuracy.

While MindaNews has long practiced rigorous fact-checking, it formalized this effort in October 2021 through participation in Internews’ Philippine Fact-Checker Incubator (PFCI) project. Internews, a global non-profit supporting independent media in over 100 countries, helped establish standardized protocols for MindaNews’ verification processes.

The organization’s fact-checking credentials extend beyond its own initiatives. MindaNews co-founded Tsek.ph, a collaborative effort among Philippine media organizations designed to combat misinformation during the 2019 elections. This partnership was revived for the 2022 electoral cycle, highlighting MindaNews’ ongoing commitment to electoral integrity through factual reporting.

Maintaining financial independence is crucial to MindaNews’ credibility. The organization sustains its operations primarily through subscriptions to its news service and book sales. It also receives grants from non-state actors, though editorial decisions remain entirely under MindaNews’ control.

Importantly, MindaNews has established clear boundaries regarding funding sources for its fact-checking operations. The organization explicitly does not accept financial support from politicians or domestic or foreign state entities for this work. This policy safeguards against potential conflicts of interest that might compromise journalistic integrity.

For its broader journalistic activities, MindaNews has received support from established international organizations including the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and UNESCO. These grants have funded core operational needs including coverage costs, staff compensation, administrative expenses, and journalism training initiatives.

The fact-checking division specifically has been supported by Internews (September 2021 to October 2022) and a BUILD grant administered by the International Fact-Checking Network (August 2023 to July 2024). Despite these external funding sources, MindaNews maintains a strict policy against funder interference in editorial decisions.

MindaNews also emphasizes public participation in its fact-checking process, actively encouraging readers to submit leads for potential verification pieces. This collaborative approach recognizes that comprehensive fact-checking requires vigilance from both journalists and citizens.

In Mindanao, where accurate information can be crucial to navigating complex social and political landscapes, MindaNews’ fact-checking initiative represents an important resource for citizens seeking clarity amid information chaos. By adhering to rigorous verification standards while maintaining editorial independence, MindaNews demonstrates how regional news organizations can contribute meaningfully to combating misinformation in their communities.
