Pakistani diplomatic efforts have successfully brought the United States and Iran to the negotiating table following weeks of escalating regional conflict, but misinformation about the talks has spread rapidly across social media platforms.

Multiple social media users began sharing a video on Thursday purportedly showing Pakistani fighter jets escorting an Iranian delegation to Islamabad for peace negotiations. The video quickly gained traction, with several posts collectively accumulating millions of views across Twitter (now X), Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

One post claiming “Pakistani fighter jets spotted to escort the Iranian delegation to Pakistan safely” received 1.5 million views, while another suggesting that Pakistan had “officially joined the war” garnered nearly 800,000 views. The posts came from accounts across the political spectrum, including PML-N supporters, pro-Iranian users, Palestinian commentators, and even pro-Israeli accounts.

However, fact-checking efforts revealed the video is actually from February 17, 2019, and shows Pakistani jets greeting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s plane during his state visit to Pakistan. The original footage was uploaded by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on February 18, 2019, titled “Pakistan fighters escort Saudi crown prince into Islamabad.”

This misrepresentation comes at a sensitive diplomatic juncture. Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator in the conflict between the United States and Iran, which intensified following US-Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026. Through backchannel efforts, Pakistan successfully facilitated communication between the warring parties, resulting in a two-week ceasefire agreement on Wednesday.

Delegations from both Iran and the United States are now expected to arrive in Islamabad for talks on Saturday, highlighting Pakistan’s growing role in regional diplomacy. This diplomatic breakthrough represents a significant development in a conflict that had threatened to engulf the broader Middle East.

While no credible media reports have confirmed Pakistani fighter jets escorting the Iranian delegation, some users and journalists have shared flight radar images suggesting the Pakistan Air Force may have provided such an escort. These claims, however, remain unverified.

Pakistan’s involvement as a mediator in this conflict underscores its strategic importance in the region and its ability to maintain diplomatic channels with both Washington and Tehran. The country has historically maintained relations with both nations, positioning itself as a potential bridge during times of heightened tension.

The rapid spread of the misleading video demonstrates how easily misinformation can circulate during significant international events, particularly those involving regional security concerns. It also highlights the importance of critical media consumption during sensitive diplomatic negotiations.

As the peace talks prepare to commence in Islamabad, attention will focus on whether this ceasefire can lead to more permanent de-escalation in a conflict that has raised fears of a wider regional war. Pakistan’s diplomatic success in bringing these parties to the negotiating table represents a notable achievement for the country’s foreign policy objectives.
