Experts Confirm Viral Video Featuring PTI Activist Sanam Javaid Khan Is a Deepfake
A video circulating widely on social media purportedly showing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist Sanam Javaid Khan in a compromising situation has been conclusively identified as a deepfake, according to multiple independent verification sources.
The 12-second clip, which first appeared on X (formerly Twitter) on April 7, shows a woman resembling Khan sitting with an unidentified man who kisses her on the cheek. The post falsely claimed the footage was recorded in Hayatabad, Peshawar, during a period when Khan had allegedly fled to the city. The video rapidly gained traction, accumulating more than 234,600 views, 920 likes, and 288 reshares on X alone, with similar claims spreading across Facebook.
Digital forensics experts who examined the footage found clear evidence of artificial intelligence manipulation. Geo Fact Check’s analysis revealed a critical flaw in the deepfake at approximately the 0:09 timestamp, where the AI-generated overlay briefly malfunctions, momentarily revealing the face of the actual woman in the original video before Khan’s likeness reappears.
“This type of glitch is a common artifact in deepfake videos, especially when the AI algorithm struggles to maintain consistency throughout every frame,” explained a digital forensics specialist familiar with deepfake detection techniques. “These momentary lapses are often key indicators that a video has been manipulated.”
The findings were corroborated by two leading AI detection platforms. Hive Moderation, a specialized AI-content detection service, analyzed the clip and assigned it an 83.6% probability of being AI-generated. Additionally, the DeepFake-O-Meter tool, developed by researchers at the University at Buffalo, delivered an even more definitive assessment, rating the video as 100% likely to be artificially created.
Anees Qureshi, an open-source intelligence analyst at the digital rights organization Bytes for All (B4A) in Islamabad, provided further confirmation to Geo Fact Check. “The video is altered using AI face swap technology, in which an original video is used to replace faces with that of another individual,” Qureshi stated, highlighting the increasing sophistication of deepfake technology.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about the misuse of AI to create convincing but fraudulent content targeting public figures, particularly women in politics. Pakistan, like many countries, has seen a surge in such deepfakes as AI tools become more accessible and user-friendly.
Digital rights advocates have warned that deepfakes pose a significant threat to public discourse and individual reputations, especially during politically sensitive periods. The technology has advanced rapidly in recent years, making detection increasingly challenging without specialized tools.
The PTI party, formed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has faced numerous challenges since his removal from office, with several party activists, including Sanam Javaid Khan, maintaining a high profile in opposition politics.
This incident highlights the critical need for media literacy and verification skills among social media users. Experts recommend scrutinizing viral videos for unnatural facial movements, inconsistent lighting, or sudden glitches—all potential indicators of AI manipulation.
For those concerned about the authenticity of videos they encounter online, numerous free AI-detection tools are now available to the public, though experts caution that no single method is foolproof as deepfake technology continues to evolve.
The false video of Khan represents what digital rights experts describe as a growing trend of using deepfakes as weapons of political harassment, particularly targeting women in public life, regardless of their political affiliations.
