Video of Wrestling Tournament Falsely Circulated as Aravali Hills Protest
A video showing a large crowd gathering in Rajasthan has been widely circulated on social media with claims that it depicts a protest against mining activities in the Aravali hills. However, fact-checking by Lighthouse Journalism has revealed the footage is actually from a wrestling tournament held in August, making the viral claim misleading.
The video was shared by numerous social media accounts, including an Instagram user named Political Voice, who presented it as evidence of mass mobilization to protect the ecologically sensitive Aravali region from mining operations. Similar claims appeared across multiple platforms, generating significant engagement.
Upon investigation, researchers conducted a reverse image search using key frames from the viral video. This led to the discovery of the same footage posted on Instagram on August 31st, with a caption describing it as Rajasthan’s largest wrestling tournament. The location was tagged as Kariri Khanpur, Mahwa – nowhere near the Aravali hills.
Further keyword searches uncovered a news report from Bhaskar.com published over four months ago, confirming that a major wrestling competition was scheduled for August 30th in Kariri village. According to the report, the event was organized as part of the Lakkhi fair of Bhairu Baba and featured prominent wrestlers from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
Additional evidence came from live coverage by regional media outlets. Rajasthan TV News streamed footage from the tournament three months ago, showing visuals that closely matched the viral video. Similarly, JAGAT TAK NEWS uploaded coverage that contained identical scenes to those being shared as the alleged protest.
The Aravali hills, stretching across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi, represent one of India’s oldest mountain ranges and are of significant ecological importance. Mining activities in the region have been a genuine source of environmental concern and have sparked protests in the past, which makes the misrepresentation particularly problematic.
Misinformation about environmental movements can undermine legitimate conservation efforts by creating confusion about actual protests and potentially diminishing public trust in genuine environmental activism. The Aravali ecosystem, already under threat from various development pressures, requires factual discourse around conservation efforts.
This incident highlights the increasing challenge of verifying viral content on social media, where videos are frequently repurposed and presented with misleading contexts. The rapid spread of such misinformation can significantly impact public perception of environmental and social movements.
Media literacy experts recommend that users verify viral claims through multiple reliable sources before sharing content, particularly when it relates to contentious issues like environmental protests or resource extraction conflicts.
Lighthouse Journalism concluded that the video, while showing a genuine gathering, had been completely misrepresented. The footage depicts a wrestling tournament in Rajasthan from August and has no connection to any protests against mining in the Aravali hills.
