In the wake of newly released court documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, a wave of misinformation has swept across Indian social media platforms, falsely implicating two of India’s most prominent political figures.

Images allegedly showing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned in the “Epstein files” have been widely shared on X (formerly Twitter) and other social media networks, prompting concern and confusion among the public.

An investigation by Lighthouse Journalism has confirmed these images are fabricated, created using artificial intelligence and digital manipulation techniques rather than being authentic court records.

The controversy began when several social media accounts, including users identified as “MR. Anil” and “Kaushik,” shared visually similar images purporting to connect the Indian politicians to Epstein’s notorious case. Both images quickly gained traction, spreading across multiple platforms and generating significant engagement.

Lighthouse Journalism conducted a comprehensive verification process that included reverse image searches across established news databases. Their investigation revealed no credible news organization had published such images, raising immediate suspicions about their authenticity.

Technical analysis provided definitive evidence of fakery. The image featuring Rahul Gandhi contained a visible watermark in the bottom right corner, indicating AI generation. When analyzed through Google Gemini SynthID, researchers confirmed “the image of Rahul Gandhi and Jeffrey Epstein is generated by AI” and contained “a digital watermark indicating it was created or edited using Google’s AI tools.”

Similarly, the image supposedly showing Prime Minister Modi in the Epstein files was identified as digitally manipulated through multiple detection tools.

This misinformation emerges against the backdrop of genuine global interest in the Epstein case documents. In January 2024, a U.S. federal judge ordered the unsealing of court records related to Epstein’s associates, revealing connections to various high-profile individuals. However, neither Gandhi nor Modi appear in any authentic records.

The fabricated images represent a troubling trend in political misinformation in India, where deepfakes and AI-generated content increasingly target public figures across party lines. The sophisticated nature of these forgeries poses new challenges for voters attempting to distinguish fact from fiction, particularly as India approaches critical electoral contests.

Media literacy experts warn that the growing accessibility of AI image generation tools has democratized the ability to create convincing fakes. What once required advanced technical skills and expensive software can now be accomplished through widely available applications, making verification increasingly important for both media organizations and social media users.

“The sophistication of these forgeries underscores the evolving challenges in maintaining information integrity in the digital age,” said a digital forensics specialist who requested anonymity. “What makes these particularly dangerous is how closely they mimic the formatting and appearance of authentic legal documents.”

Social media platforms have faced mounting pressure to address misinformation, particularly when it targets political figures or involves judicial proceedings. While companies have implemented various detection mechanisms, the volume and sophistication of manipulated content continue to outpace enforcement efforts.

Lighthouse Journalism’s conclusion is unequivocal: “Viral images purporting to show Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Epstein Files are digitally manipulated and AI-generated. The viral claim is false.”

As the Epstein case continues to generate international interest, this incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of verification in an era where seeing is no longer necessarily believing.
