Netanyahu Death Rumors Debunked: Video of Israeli Mayor Misrepresented Online

Conspiracy theories claiming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has died amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran have spread rapidly across social media platforms in recent days, despite multiple video appearances by Netanyahu aimed at quashing the rumors.

The unfounded speculation intensified when social media users began sharing a video showing a man in a yellow safety vest examining a damaged bathroom, with claims that an “Israeli journalist” was announcing Netanyahu’s death at this location. The viral video features a man speaking in Hebrew while pointing to destruction caused by what appears to be missile debris.

India Today’s fact-checking team has definitively identified the man in the footage as Yair Chetboun, mayor of the Israeli city of Ariel, not a journalist as claimed. The mayor was inspecting residential damage from a recent rocket attack, with no mention whatsoever of the prime minister.

Multiple independent translations of Chetboun’s Hebrew comments confirm he was discussing the importance of following safety protocols during attacks. According to translations verified by Google’s AI tool NotebookLM, the mayor stated: “Dear residents, we are in a house that experienced a shrapnel hit; it only sharpens for us the importance of instructions. The family was inside a shelter.”

Chetboun continued, emphasizing how following safety guidance prevented casualties: “Look how much destruction comes from relatively small but heavy shrapnel. It could have ended, God forbid, in a completely different event if someone hadn’t adhered to the instructions. Thank God this event ended well.”

The misrepresentation of this footage comes amid heightened regional tensions. Iran launched missile attacks against Israel on March 13, with the Ariel municipality documenting damage to several residential buildings. Israeli news outlet News08 reported that shrapnel pierced the roof of the building shown in the viral video.

The Ariel municipality’s official Facebook page also posted footage on March 13 showing the same damaged location, further confirming the video’s context and timing. Al Jazeera published the video on YouTube with an Arabic caption clearly identifying Chetboun as “the mayor of Ariel settlement” documenting residential damage “caused by shrapnel from an Iranian missile.”

This misleading claim about Netanyahu is part of a broader pattern of misinformation surrounding the Israel-Iran conflict. Social media platforms have become breeding grounds for unverified claims, with users questioning the authenticity of Netanyahu’s video appearances and suggesting they are AI-generated—further fueling the death rumors.

Fact-checkers have noted an increase in digitally manipulated content and misattributed videos circulating online during this period of heightened regional conflict. Security analysts suggest such misinformation campaigns can potentially exacerbate tensions and create public confusion during already volatile situations.

The spread of these rumors demonstrates the challenges of information verification during international crises, when emotional reactions and confirmation bias can accelerate the sharing of unverified claims. Media literacy experts emphasize the importance of consulting multiple reliable sources before sharing potentially misleading content during sensitive geopolitical events.

As regional tensions continue, officials from multiple countries have called for restraint and de-escalation, while urging citizens to rely on verified information from official government and established news sources.
