The video purporting to show Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, distributing money at the 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention has been debunked as misleading by fact-checkers.
The footage, which went viral across social media platforms, shows MC Oluomo—a prominent transport union leader in Lagos—handing cash to a group of people. Accompanying captions claimed this occurred during the APC’s national convention held in Abuja on March 27-28, 2026, suggesting potential voter inducement or improper financial activities at the political gathering.
FactCheckAfrica conducted an investigation into the video’s authenticity and context, revealing several key discrepancies that undermine the claim. Through reverse video verification techniques, researchers determined the footage had been in circulation well before the convention took place.
“The video had already been shared online prior to the APC convention, confirming it is not recent footage,” noted the fact-checkers in their analysis. This finding directly contradicts the temporal claims made by those sharing the video during the convention period.
Further verification involved cross-referencing the viral clip against official coverage of the APC convention. Punch Newspapers published a comprehensive report on the event proceedings, which contained no mention of such an incident. Additionally, live coverage from credible media organizations present at the convention showed no evidence of MC Oluomo engaging in cash distribution as depicted in the video.
The investigation highlights a common tactic in digital misinformation—recycling authentic but unrelated footage and presenting it with new, misleading context to create false narratives. This approach is particularly effective during politically sensitive periods when public attention is focused on major events.
MC Oluomo, whose real name is Musiliu Akinsanya, serves as the Chairman of the Lagos State Parks Management Committee and maintains significant influence in transportation networks across Lagos State. His activities often draw public attention due to his political connections and public profile.
The timing of the video’s recirculation appears deliberate, coinciding with the national convention of Nigeria’s ruling party. Such misinformation can potentially influence public perception of political processes and undermine trust in democratic institutions.
Media literacy experts point to this case as emblematic of the challenges facing information consumers in the digital age. “Content verification is increasingly crucial as social media allows for rapid, contextless sharing of visual material,” explains Dr. Adebayo Ogunlesi, a media studies professor at the University of Lagos. “When videos are stripped of their original context and repurposed to fit current narratives, they can significantly distort public discourse.”
The incident underscores the importance of critical evaluation of social media content, particularly during politically charged periods when misinformation tends to proliferate. Fact-checking organizations continue to play a vital role in verifying claims and providing accurate information to counter the spread of misleading content.
Nigerian electoral authorities have previously expressed concerns about the impact of misinformation on the electoral process, with the Independent National Electoral Commission establishing dedicated units to address false claims during election periods.
