Social media posts falsely attributed quotes to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni claiming that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was an “international embarrassment” who hindered peace efforts in Gaza, Reuters fact-checkers have confirmed.

The fabricated statements, which spread across multiple platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok, suggested Meloni had criticized Starmer for meddling in international affairs while telling him to “sort out his own country” first. These claims began circulating on October 12, just as world leaders gathered in Egypt to finalize details of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

“We do not usually comment on social media posts from unofficial accounts or pages, especially when they contain fake news, as in this case,” a spokesperson for Meloni’s office told Reuters in an email, directly refuting the authenticity of the quotes.

Reuters’ investigation traced the earliest examples of these claims to a UK-based Facebook page called “Wakefield News,” which explicitly categorizes its content as satire and parody. The page’s bio clearly states: “Nothing on this page is serious.” One post attributing the inflammatory quotes to Meloni even carried the Italian word “satira” (meaning “satire”) as a label, though this context was lost as the content spread across social media platforms.

The timing of these false claims coincided with both Meloni and Starmer’s participation in a significant diplomatic summit in Egypt. Both leaders arrived on October 13 to support the implementation of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire that had taken effect on October 10.

In stark contrast to the fabricated hostile remarks, Meloni’s actual statements to Italian media emphasized cooperation and peace-building. She described the summit as important for “consolidating the ceasefire and fully implementing the agreement to build a future of lasting peace and stability.” The Italian leader also indicated that the summit brought Italy closer to recognizing a Palestinian state, which she said was her aim.

Britain, along with eight other countries including France, had already formally recognized Palestinian statehood the previous month, marking a significant diplomatic development in the region.

The fabricated quotes appear to exploit existing political tensions and the high-stakes nature of Middle East peace negotiations. The Gaza ceasefire represents a crucial diplomatic breakthrough after months of conflict between Israel and Hamas, making any perceived rifts between Western allies particularly newsworthy.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of satirical content being stripped of its original context as it spreads across social media platforms. Without clear labels identifying content as satire, statements originally meant as parody can quickly transform into misinformation that appears credible to casual readers.

Reuters’ fact-checking team regularly examines viral claims to determine their accuracy. In this case, the verdict was clear: the quotes attributed to Meloni were satirical in origin and have no basis in fact, despite their widespread sharing across multiple social media platforms without proper context.
