Despite NBA Trade Deadline Rumors, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Future Remains Uncertain
As the February 5 NBA trade deadline approaches, speculation continues to swirl around Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, with several teams reportedly positioning themselves as potential landing spots for the two-time MVP.
Recent reports suggest the New York Knicks are frontrunners in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, with analysts giving them a 28% probability of acquiring the Greek star. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Antetokounmpo allegedly told at least one teammate last summer that he believed a trade to the Knicks was nearly finalized.
The situation has intensified following ESPN’s Shams Charania’s report that Antetokounmpo and his agent, Alex Saratsis, are actively discussing with Milwaukee’s front office “whether his best fit is staying or pursuing a move elsewhere.” This revelation has triggered a flurry of speculation about potential destinations for the six-time All-Star.
While the Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as one of the interested parties, industry experts remain skeptical about their ability to put together a competitive offer. Fischer specifically addressed the Lakers’ limitations, writing: “The Lakers simply don’t appear to have anything close to the draft capital — or the young talent — to truly make a competitive offer to tempt the Bucks… unless Milwaukee sees Austin Reaves as a [Trae] Young-esque talent who will emerge as a perennial All-Star to build around moving forward.”
Despite the swirling rumors, analysts still give Antetokounmpo a 29% chance of remaining with the Bucks after the trade deadline passes, making Milwaukee currently the most likely destination for their franchise cornerstone.
The San Antonio Spurs represent another intriguing possibility, with a reported 15% chance of landing Antetokounmpo. Basketball analysts have noted that pairing him with rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama could create one of the most formidable frontcourt combinations in the league, potentially accelerating San Antonio’s rebuilding timeline significantly.
The Atlanta Hawks have also emerged as potential trade partners, according to Fischer, though specific details regarding potential packages have not been disclosed.
Complicating matters further is Antetokounmpo’s recent calf injury, which has sidelined him for six games already this season. Medical reports indicate he could miss an additional two to four weeks, raising questions about how his health status might impact potential trade negotiations as the deadline nears.
When healthy, Antetokounmpo has continued to demonstrate MVP-caliber performance this season, averaging an impressive 30.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.4 assists while shooting at a remarkably efficient 64% from the field. These elite numbers underscore why multiple franchises would be willing to part with significant assets to acquire his services.
For the Bucks, any decision to trade Antetokounmpo would represent a seismic shift for a franchise that has built its identity around the superstar since drafting him 15th overall in 2013. His development from a raw, lanky prospect into one of the game’s dominant forces has mirrored Milwaukee’s rise from mediocrity to championship contention, culminating in their 2021 NBA title.
As speculation continues, the Bucks’ front office faces an unprecedented dilemma: maintain faith in their championship core built around Antetokounmpo or pivot toward a rebuild by capitalizing on his tremendous trade value while they still can.
With the trade deadline now weeks away, all eyes remain on Milwaukee as one of the NBA’s most compelling storylines continues to unfold.

As a Bucks fan, I really hope Giannis stays put. He’s the face of the franchise and they’ve built a contender around him. Sure, the Knicks or Lakers would love to have him, but I don’t see him forcing his way out of Milwaukee.
I’m skeptical of the Giannis to Lakers rumors. While the fit would be amazing, the Lakers just don’t have the assets to make that kind of blockbuster deal work. It seems more likely he stays in Milwaukee or ends up somewhere like the Knicks.
I’m curious to see how this Giannis situation plays out. With him and his agent actively discussing his future, it sounds like there could be some real uncertainty there. But it’s hard to imagine him leaving Milwaukee without a clear path to title contention elsewhere.
Interesting rumors, but it’s hard to believe the Bucks would trade Giannis – he’s the heart of their team. The Lakers would have to give up a lot to get him, and I’m not sure they have the assets to make it work.
With the trade deadline coming up, the Giannis speculation is sure to ramp up even more. But I agree, it’s hard to imagine the Bucks letting their superstar walk, especially to a team like the Lakers that they could end up facing in the playoffs.
The Lakers would love to pair Giannis with LeBron, but the logistics of making that happen seem very challenging. They’d likely have to gut their roster, and the Bucks probably wouldn’t be interested in the kind of package the Lakers could offer.
Interesting to see the Knicks emerge as frontrunners for Giannis. They certainly have the cap space and market to entice him, but he seems pretty committed to the Bucks. I’d be surprised if he bolts for New York, even if they can put together an enticing offer.
The Knicks as frontrunners for Giannis? That would certainly shake up the NBA landscape. But I’m skeptical too – Giannis seems pretty loyal to the Bucks and the Knicks haven’t exactly been a powerhouse in recent years.
