Viral Video Claiming 4,000 US Soldiers Killed in Israel Debunked
A viral video claiming that 4,000 American soldiers were killed in an Iranian attack at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport has been exposed as a sophisticated fabrication. The misleading content, which spread across multiple social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, X, and YouTube earlier this month, combined unrelated footage from various global incidents with manipulated audio and AI-generated content.
Tempo’s fact-checking team conducted a thorough investigation into the video, which featured dramatic scenes of missile launches, burning buildings, and explosions. Through reverse image searches, visual analysis, AI detection tools, and verification against credible news sources, they determined the footage had been deceptively edited to create a false narrative.
One segment purportedly showing a news broadcast about the attack revealed several red flags. The presenter’s lip movements were noticeably out of sync with the audio—a common characteristic of AI-generated content. Further investigation found the original footage came from Liputan6 news on SCTV, not TVOne as suggested by the manipulated logo. The original broadcast, from December 2025, actually covered flash floods in Aceh, Indonesia.
AI detection tools confirmed the deception, with Hive Moderation AI detecting a 97.5 percent similarity to known manipulated content. Another analysis using Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector indicated that 99 percent of the presenter’s audio was synthetically produced.
Other segments in the viral video were similarly misrepresented. Footage claimed to show Ben Gurion Airport under attack actually depicted a May 2025 Israeli military strike on Sanaa Airport in Yemen, according to Associated Press reporting. The video had originated from media owned by the Houthi group, Ansar Allah.
Another clip showing dramatic explosions was traced to a March 11, 2026, drone attack on oil tanks at the Port of Salalah in Oman. Reuters had reported this incident as allegedly carried out by Iranian forces, though Iran has maintained it is still investigating these allegations.
The video’s central claim of 4,000 U.S. troop casualties is also demonstrably false. According to Military.com and Fox Live Now, the actual figures from February 28 to April 3, 2026, show 365 U.S. troops wounded and 13 killed in the broader conflict. During this same period, Iran has suffered approximately 1,900 casualties while Israel has reported around 1,400 deaths.
While Iran has claimed multiple attacks on Ben Gurion Airport—with the Iranian news agency WANA reporting the most recent one in early April and Al Jazeera noting similar claims from Houthi forces—these incidents have not significantly disrupted airport operations. The Times of Israel reported that on April 5, the biggest disruption was caused by the discovery of a suspicious package emitting smoke, not a missile attack.
Israeli transportation authorities have maintained tight security at Ben Gurion Airport, with Ynetnews reporting that flight restrictions were only beginning to ease as of April 6, allowing airlines to sell up to 100 seats per flight, including a 30 percent allocation for humanitarian missions.
The spread of such fabricated content highlights the growing challenge of misinformation during international conflicts, where sophisticated editing techniques and artificial intelligence can be weaponized to create convincing but entirely false narratives. This incident demonstrates the importance of critical media consumption and professional fact-checking in the current information environment.
Based on their comprehensive verification process, Tempo’s fact-checking team has conclusively determined that the claim of an Iranian missile strike killing 4,000 U.S. soldiers at Ben Gurion Airport is false.
