In a dramatic development, claims suggesting former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte sought reconciliation with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. have been thoroughly debunked as false information. The fabricated story, which circulated widely on social media, alleged Duterte wanted to apologize for “many sins” committed against the current president.

The viral TikTok video making these claims garnered over 100,000 views and substantial engagement from users who believed the narrative. The post featured text reading “Duterte nais humingi ng kapatawaran kay Pangulong Marcos Jr.” (Rodrigo Duterte wants to ask forgiveness from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.), and came from an account falsely presenting itself as a legitimate news organization.

Digital forensics specialists have determined the image accompanying the claim is almost certainly artificial intelligence-generated. Two separate AI detection tools—Sight Engine and Hive Moderation—concluded with 98% certainty that the image was computer-generated rather than authentic, with specific indicators pointing to the use of GPT-based diffusion models.

No credible news sources, official statements, photographs, or video evidence support the reconciliation claim. All legitimate reporting on Duterte’s current situation has focused exclusively on his detention at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, where he faces serious charges related to his controversial war on drugs campaign while in office.

The fabricated story claimed Duterte’s spokesperson in The Hague had announced the former president’s desire to apologize for wrongdoings against Marcos and prevent further escalation of their political conflict. This statement appears to be entirely fictional, as no such announcement was made through official channels.

Duterte’s actual circumstances stand in stark contrast to the false reconciliation narrative. He was arrested on March 11, 2025, and remains detained at the ICC facility in Scheveningen while facing charges of crimes against humanity connected to his anti-drug operations during his presidency.

As recently as March 6, 2026, the ICC appeals chamber unanimously rejected a defense request for Duterte’s temporary release. His legal team had argued for consideration based on his health and alleged cognitive impairment, but an independent medical panel found no significant issues beyond normal aging. The pre-trial chamber subsequently ruled Duterte fit to participate in pre-trial proceedings.

The ICC now has approximately two months from February 27—when his pre-trial hearing concluded—to decide whether to advance Duterte’s case to full trial. Meanwhile, his defense team continues to challenge the ICC’s jurisdiction in a separate ongoing appeal.

This incident highlights the growing problem of AI-generated misinformation in political discourse, particularly in the Philippines’ highly polarized environment. The ease with which fabricated images and stories can spread through social media platforms presents significant challenges for media literacy and democratic processes, especially concerning high-profile political figures like Duterte and Marcos.

The false reconciliation narrative appears designed to exploit existing tensions between supporters of both political figures, potentially influencing public perception during a sensitive period in Philippine politics while serious legal proceedings against the former president continue internationally.
