Trump’s Return: Falsehoods and Distortions Dominate Political Landscape
Since returning to the White House in 2025, President Donald Trump has once again dominated the landscape of political misinformation, continuing his well-established pattern of using inaccurate and exaggerated claims to justify policy changes and governmental decisions.
Trump’s rhetoric has fueled a whirlwind of controversial policy moves, including the implementation of what he called “reciprocal tariffs” on imported goods—a calculation method economists widely criticized as illegitimate. His decision to fire the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics came with unsubstantiated claims that disappointing job growth figures were “phony” or “rigged,” despite no evidence of data manipulation.
The administration’s approach to foreign aid has also been marked by misleading statements. In justifying a freeze on international assistance, Trump claimed $50 million was being used to buy condoms for Hamas in Gaza. The contractor identified by the State Department promptly refuted this assertion, stating it provides hospital services in Gaza and has never used U.S. funds “to procure or distribute condoms.”
Health policy has emerged as a particularly contentious area under the new administration. In what Trump hyped as “one of the biggest medical announcements in the history of our country,” he and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. held a press conference promoting an unproven link between autism and Tylenol use during pregnancy. Trump repeatedly advised pregnant women to “tough it out” rather than take the medication—advice that contradicts established medical guidance.
Medical experts note that while some studies have shown an association between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism, no causal link has been established, and recent research suggests there likely isn’t a connection. Moreover, untreated pain or fever during pregnancy can harm both mother and child, making Trump’s simplistic medical advice potentially dangerous.
Kennedy, long known for spreading vaccine misinformation, has also made his mark on public health policy. He pushed unproven therapeutics for treating measles during an outbreak in Texas that ultimately killed two children, suggesting steroid treatments, antibiotics, and cod liver oil—none of which are recommended treatments for the disease. Under his leadership, the CDC also revised its webpage to state that the claim “vaccines do not cause autism” is “not an evidence-based claim,” contradicting the scientific consensus.
The administration has made numerous false statements about mRNA vaccines, the technology behind the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. Kennedy terminated half a billion dollars of funding for mRNA vaccine projects, claiming “the data show these vaccines fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu.” This assertion directly contradicts peer-reviewed scientific literature demonstrating the vaccines’ effectiveness and safety.
Economic misinformation has also been prevalent. Trump repeatedly claimed inflation is “stopped” or “dead” and falsely stated that the country experienced “the worst inflation in the history of our country” under Biden. In reality, the annualized inflation rate was 3% when Trump took office in January, the same as the 12-month rate ending in September. Historical records show much worse inflation after World War I, when prices rose 23.7% from June 1919 to June 1920.
Foreign policy has not escaped the wave of misinformation. Trump falsely reprimanded Ukraine for starting the war with Russia, saying, “You should have never started it” and “could have made a deal.” The historical record is clear: Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, following years of tension and conflict.
The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, has also been a source of questionable information. Despite Trump’s claim that DOGE had “found hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud,” the department’s own website showed far less, citing $214 billion in savings with evidence provided for only about $61 billion.
As the administration continues to implement sweeping changes across government, the pattern of justifying decisions with misleading or false information remains consistent—a concerning trend for those monitoring the accuracy of political discourse in America.
