AI-Generated “Home Alone” Reunion Photos Debunked as Holiday Hoax
Images purportedly showing a heartwarming reunion between “Home Alone” stars Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, and Daniel Stern have been confirmed as fake. The fabricated photos, which began circulating widely on social media in mid-December, showed the trio enjoying coffee and dessert together—supposedly 35 years after the release of the beloved Christmas classic.
The images quickly went viral across multiple platforms, with one Facebook post captioned “REUNITED AFTER 35 YEARS” gaining significant traction. The post continued with nostalgic sentiment: “Seeing them together again feels like pure nostalgia and childhood memories hitting at once.” Similar posts appeared on Instagram, Reddit, Threads, and X (formerly Twitter), with some publishers even reporting on the supposed reunion as fact.
However, a closer examination revealed these images were entirely generated by artificial intelligence. The source of the fabricated photos has been identified as Angel Cakes, a bakery in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which posted the images to its Instagram account on December 15 to promote its holiday offerings.
Several telltale signs expose the images as AI-generated fakes. In multiple photos, Culkin’s right hand shows inconsistencies with rings and wristwatches appearing and disappearing between shots. Perhaps most noticeably, both Joe Pesci, 82, and Daniel Stern, 68, appear remarkably younger in the fake images compared to recent genuine photographs of the actors from 2020 and 2021.
Additional discrepancies include variations in Culkin’s attire across the six images. In one photo showing the trio standing with a fourth person holding an Angel Cakes box, Culkin wears a necklace not visible in any other images. The same photo shows him with two close-together buttons at the bottom of his shirt, while other images depict just one button.
The Dubai bakery has a history of using AI-generated promotional content. Previous posts on its Instagram account showed Formula 1 drivers supposedly visiting the establishment, with their race cars conveniently parked outside—images that were similarly fabricated.
No legitimate news outlets reported an actual reunion between the three actors. Had such a gathering actually occurred with multiple photos taken, entertainment media worldwide would have extensively covered the event. The complete absence of video footage further supports the conclusion that no reunion took place, despite Angel Cakes’ Instagram account typically featuring video content.
The “Home Alone” franchise remains a cultural touchstone, especially during the holiday season. The original 1990 film and its 1992 sequel, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” continue to be holiday staples for many families. In these films, Culkin portrayed Kevin McCallister, a resourceful child accidentally left home alone who defends his house from bungling burglars Harry and Marv, played by Pesci and Stern respectively.
While this particular reunion didn’t happen, Entertainment Weekly reported in December 2024 that several actors who played McCallister children in the first two films did hold a genuine reunion. Notably, Culkin, Pesci, and Stern did not participate in that event.
This incident highlights the increasing sophistication and prevalence of AI-generated imagery in social media. As the technology becomes more accessible, distinguishing between authentic photos and AI creations grows increasingly challenging for the average social media user, particularly when the fake images align with nostalgic desires for beloved entertainment reunions.
