Viral Claims of Netanyahu’s Bodyguard Death Debunked as AI-Generated Hoax
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced multiple rounds of misinformation last week, as social media users spread false rumors about both his death and the alleged assassination of his personal bodyguard.
The wave of disinformation began when Netanyahu shared a video of himself at a cafe on March 15 to dispel widespread rumors of his death. That video was immediately met with thousands of comments accusing it of being AI-generated, forcing Netanyahu’s X (formerly Twitter) account to post another video the following day showing him interacting with people.
Amid this confusion, another false claim gained traction online. Social media users began circulating an image allegedly showing “Nada Fashkhon,” described as Netanyahu’s personal bodyguard who had been assassinated. The photo depicted a woman in what appeared to be an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) uniform, smiling at the camera with other uniformed personnel and a tank visible in the background.
“The assassination of Netanyahu’s personal bodyguard, the officer Nada Fashkhon, has been confirmed,” read one viral post on X that helped spread the claim.
A fact-check investigation has conclusively determined that the image is AI-generated and the claim is entirely fabricated. The analysis revealed several telltale signs of artificial creation, including inconsistencies typical of synthetic media.
The woman in the foreground appears unnaturally sharp compared to the blurred background figures, a common characteristic of AI-generated portraits. Close examination also revealed subtle distortions in details such as the IDF emblem on her uniform and a ring on her left hand.
When analyzed using Google DeepMind’s SynthID, a specialized detector for synthetic media created using Google’s AI tools, the image was confirmed to be artificially generated.
Further investigation found no credible news reports about an IDF officer named Nada Fashkhon, nor any evidence that such a person exists. There have been no reports of assassinations within Netanyahu’s security detail during the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran.
The security arrangements for Israel’s Prime Minister involve a sophisticated, multi-layered system primarily managed by specialized units of the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security and counterintelligence service. According to a 2025 report by Israeli news outlet Ynet, the Shin Bet had implemented “unprecedented” protective measures for the PM, including high-tech body scanners similar to those found in airports.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing between authentic and AI-generated content in conflict reporting. The Middle East, particularly the Israel-Hamas conflict zone, has become a hotbed for manipulated media and fabricated claims designed to sow confusion or advance partisan narratives.
Social media platforms continue to struggle with the rapid spread of such synthetic content. Despite efforts to implement detection tools and warning labels, AI-generated images can reach millions before being identified as fake.
The Netanyahu security detail hoax represents a concerning trend in modern information warfare, where artificial intelligence tools are increasingly deployed to create convincing but entirely fictional scenarios related to high-profile political figures and ongoing conflicts.
Security experts warn that as AI technology advances, the public and media organizations will need to exercise even greater caution when encountering dramatic claims about political figures, particularly those accompanied by photographic “evidence” that hasn’t been verified by credible sources.
