False Claims Surface About Rep. Ted Lieu’s Allegations Against Pam Bondi
Viral social media posts claiming that Democratic U.S. Representative Ted Lieu of California accused Attorney General Pam Bondi of having her college and law school education paid for by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been debunked as fabricated.
The false rumor began circulating on Facebook in late March 2026, with posts alleging that Lieu had raised “explosive questions” about Bondi’s ties to Epstein. One widely shared post claimed: “It appears Epstein paid for Pam Bondi’s college and law school tuition so she could work for them. Bondi helped Epstein get acquitted when he was charged with sex crimes in Florida.”
The posts linked to a suspicious blog filled with advertisements and pop-up windows – classic signs of clickbait content designed to generate traffic rather than deliver legitimate news. The article provided no direct quotes from Lieu, no credible sources, and no evidence supporting its sensational claims.
A thorough investigation by fact-checkers found no legitimate news coverage of Lieu making such accusations against Bondi. Had a sitting congressman made such explosive allegations about a high-ranking Department of Justice official, it would have garnered extensive coverage from major news outlets. No such reporting exists.
What did occur, according to verified reports, was a contentious exchange between Lieu and Bondi during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on February 11, 2026. During this hearing, Lieu played a video showing former President Donald Trump with Epstein and questioned Bondi about her handling of files related to the government’s investigation of the disgraced financier. Bondi called Lieu’s questioning “ridiculous” – but at no point did Lieu accuse Bondi of having her education financed by Epstein.
Images accompanying the false claims appear to be digitally manipulated photographs of Lieu and Bondi from various hearings, including the February 2026 session. A reverse image search revealed no credible source for these photos, further suggesting manipulation.
The timeline also makes the allegations implausible. Bondi attended the University of Florida for her undergraduate studies, graduating in 1987, and then Stetson College of Law, from which she graduated in 1990. During this period, Epstein was working as a consultant for a New York financial firm, and while he did travel to Florida, there is no evidence connecting him to Bondi during her student years.
This fabricated story represents what media literacy experts call “AI slop” – low-quality content likely generated by artificial intelligence, designed to create shocking clickbait that drives web traffic and ad revenue. Such content typically includes sensational claims without proper sourcing or verification.
The false allegations about Lieu and Bondi join a growing trend of misinformation targeting public figures through manipulated images and fabricated quotes. Earlier this year, fact-checkers also debunked fake images purporting to show a young Bondi with Trump and Epstein.
Social media users are advised to verify information through multiple reputable sources, particularly when encountering sensational claims about public figures that aren’t being reported by established news organizations.

Interesting claims, but the fact-checkers seem to have thoroughly debunked this story as false. Without credible sources and evidence, these allegations against Bondi should be viewed with skepticism.
