False Claims Circulate About ICE Agents Reducing TSA Wait Times in Minneapolis

Social media claims suggesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have reduced security wait times at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) have been debunked by airport authorities and federal officials.

The controversy emerged as President Donald Trump deployed ICE agents to select airports nationwide to address long security lines caused by the ongoing partial government shutdown. The shutdown, stemming from congressional disagreement over Homeland Security funding and immigration policy, has severely impacted Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operations at major transportation hubs.

TSA officers have been working without pay since Department of Homeland Security funding lapsed in February. The situation has led to increased absenteeism, staffing shortages, and resignations, resulting in extensive security delays at numerous airports across the country.

Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) fueled the controversy with a social media post viewed over 1.3 million times on X. In an 18-second video, Boebert claimed: “So President Trump sends ICE agents to the airports across the country. And while the rest of our country has three-plus-hour waits, thanks Democrats, Minneapolis airports’ TSA wait times right now is less than five minutes.”

The post was captioned: “You can’t make this stuff up! ICE agents show up at airports, and suddenly TSA wait times in Minneapolis drop to less than five minutes! Called it!!”

However, official information from the Department of Homeland Security contradicts this claim. On Monday, DHS identified 14 specific airports where TSA operations would receive supplemental staffing from ICE agents. Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport was not among those listed.

The airports receiving ICE assistance include major hubs such as Chicago-O’Hare, JFK and LaGuardia in New York, Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, and several others experiencing significant disruptions. The deployment represents an unusual cross-agency response to maintain critical transportation infrastructure during the funding impasse.

In a direct rebuttal to Boebert’s claim, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) responded: “ICE agents have not been deployed into Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. Our airport security wait times are normally quick and have been throughout the Republican shutdown.”

The Metropolitan Airports Commission, which oversees MSP, confirmed in a statement that they were “not aware of any planned changes for security checkpoint staffing at MSP at this time.” The commission further noted that despite the shutdown and heavy spring break travel, TSA checkpoint wait times have consistently remained under 30 minutes at the airport.

“The relatively low wait times are a testament to the commitment of the local TSA team. We’re grateful for the TSA’s continued service to maintain smooth and secure travel for MSP passengers,” the spokesperson added.

After facing criticism, Boebert attempted to clarify her statement in a follow-up post, writing: “I never said ICE was at MSP.” Nevertheless, her original post directly implied a causal relationship between ICE agents showing up at airports and reduced wait times specifically at Minneapolis.

A community note has since been added to Boebert’s original post on X, stating: “ICE agents are assisting TSA at some airports with long wait times due to the partial government shutdown. However, ICE has not been deployed to MSP, where wait times are currently less than 5 minutes and have remained short.”

The deployment of ICE agents to assist with airport security represents an unprecedented measure to address the growing crisis at American airports. As the partial government shutdown continues with no immediate resolution in sight, transportation officials warn that further disruptions to air travel could intensify, potentially affecting the broader economy and millions of travelers.
