African football fans and sports enthusiasts were caught in a web of misinformation last month following a controversial social media post about Senegal’s national team coach.
On January 19, popular sports results provider LiveScore claimed via its X (formerly Twitter) account that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had imposed an indefinite suspension on Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw. According to the post, which quickly gained traction, Thiaw was allegedly punished for instructing his players to walk off the pitch during a match against Morocco at the African Cup of Nations in protest of a controversial penalty decision.
“Pape Thiaw has been suspended indefinitely by CAF,” LiveScore wrote to its 545,000 followers. “The decision follows his order for Senegal’s players to leave the pitch in protest of the controversial penalty award.”
The post spread rapidly across the platform, accumulating 435,000 views, 751 reposts, and over 7,200 likes within hours. Hundreds of users bookmarked the information, suggesting many accepted the news at face value without verification.
However, several journalists and football insiders quickly challenged the claim’s authenticity. Among them was Osasu Obayiuwana, a former member of FIFA’s Anti-Racism Taskforce and contributor to The Guardian (UK), who labeled it “FAKE NEWS” and pointed out that CAF’s Disciplinary Committee had not yet convened to review the tournament’s incidents.
A review of CAF’s official communications channels at the time revealed no announcement regarding an indefinite suspension for the Senegalese coach, raising further doubts about LiveScore’s claim.
The actual disciplinary action became clear on January 28, when CAF published official sanctions on its website. The continental governing body announced that Thiaw would face a five-match suspension from official CAF competitions – significantly different from the indefinite ban claimed in the viral post.
“CAF Disciplinary Board imposes sanctions on the Federation Senegalaise de Football (FSF), the Federation Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF),” the organization stated. It further explained that Thiaw’s punishment was “for his unsporting conduct in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity and for bringing the game into disrepute.”
This incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in sports reporting, particularly on social media platforms where verified and unverified claims can spread with equal speed. LiveScore, which primarily built its reputation on providing accurate real-time match results, has not issued any public correction or clarification regarding the erroneous post.
The episode comes amid increasing tensions surrounding officiating decisions in African football. The match in question was particularly contentious as it featured host nation Morocco, leading some fans to speculate about potential favoritism – allegations that CAF has consistently denied.
For Senegal, a footballing powerhouse that won the previous edition of the African Cup of Nations, the five-match suspension of their coach represents a significant challenge as they prepare for upcoming competitions, including World Cup qualifiers. Thiaw, who took over the team relatively recently, has been working to build on the foundation established by his predecessor Aliou Cissé.
The incident also raises questions about accountability for sports news providers and the responsibility of platforms with large followings to verify information before publishing, especially when it concerns official disciplinary actions that can affect reputations and careers in professional sports.
As the continental football body continues its post-tournament review, this case serves as a reminder for football fans to seek information from official sources and to approach unconfirmed reports with healthy skepticism, particularly during high-stakes tournaments when emotions run high.
