Old Protest Video from Uttar Pradesh Misattributed as Recent Violence in West Bengal

A video circulating on social media platforms allegedly showing a Muslim Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker named Nazrul Islam being attacked by Hindus in West Bengal has been identified as misleading. Fact-checking efforts have revealed that the video actually depicts violence from Agniveer protests in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, from June 2022.

The investigation began with a reverse image search conducted using Google Lens on a portion of the viral video. This search led to a report published by OneIndia Tamil on June 20, 2022, which featured screenshots from the same video. The report specifically covered unrest during protests against the Agniveer military recruitment scheme in Varanasi.

Upon closer examination of the clearer version of the footage found in the OneIndia Tamil report, a significant detail emerged. A board visible in the background clearly reads “Telephone Colony Nagar Nigam Varanasi,” confirming the location as Uttar Pradesh, not West Bengal.

This finding conclusively establishes that the video has been repurposed and shared with false context. The footage is approximately two years old and has no connection to any recent incidents in West Bengal or to a TMC worker named Nazrul Islam.

The Agniveer protests of June 2022 saw widespread demonstrations across several states in India, including Uttar Pradesh. Young people took to the streets to express their opposition to the new military recruitment scheme, which proposed shorter tenures for recruits. Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, was among the cities that witnessed significant protest activity.

The false attribution of this video highlights a concerning trend of misinformation surrounding political and communal issues in India. West Bengal, with its complex political landscape dominated by the TMC under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has often been the subject of misleading claims, particularly regarding communal tensions.

Media experts point out that such misattribution can inflame tensions in politically sensitive regions. Dr. Rajesh Kumar, a media studies professor at Delhi University, notes, “Recycling old videos with false communal or political narratives has become increasingly common on social media platforms. This poses serious challenges to social harmony, especially in regions with delicate political balances like West Bengal.”

The viral spread of such misinformation underscores the importance of digital literacy and fact-checking. Social media users are encouraged to verify information before sharing it further, particularly content that appears to show violence or makes claims about religious or political tensions.

This incident also demonstrates the value of digital verification tools like reverse image searches, which can help determine the original context of visual content. Such tools have become essential in combating the spread of misinformation in the digital age.

Various fact-checking organizations across India have been working to counter such false narratives, providing verification services to the public. These efforts are crucial in maintaining the integrity of public discourse, especially concerning sensitive issues of politics, religion, and social conflict.

As elections approach in various states, including West Bengal in the coming years, the potential for misleading content to influence public opinion increases. Media literacy advocates emphasize that distinguishing between authentic and manipulated information is more important than ever in India’s diverse and complex political landscape.
