In a troubling case of digital misinformation, two viral videos purporting to show Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s outraged reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial “Pearl Harbor” joke have been confirmed as sophisticated deepfakes.
The fabricated videos, which began circulating on social media platforms shortly after Trump and Takaichi’s recent White House meeting, portrayed the Japanese leader making inflammatory statements about her U.S. visit.
In one manipulated clip, a voice claiming to be Takaichi declares: “I will never set foot in the United States again. This trip to the White House was the most humiliating meeting of my political career.” The second video shows her supposedly demanding an apology from Trump for his behavior.
Both videos featured additional fabricated statements where Takaichi appeared to accuse Trump of using Japan’s crude oil supply as leverage to pressure Japan into an “irrelevant war” and described experiencing “one-sided humiliation and demands” during the diplomatic encounter.
An investigation by India Today’s Fact Check team confirmed these videos are entirely synthetic. Analysis of the authentic White House meeting footage reveals stark differences between Takaichi’s actual speaking style and English accent compared to the voice heard in the manipulated videos.
Digital forensic examination found telltale watermarks linking the videos to TikTok accounts “@startalker_v” and “@gossip.lightning8,” both of which had labeled their content as AI-generated and have histories of publishing similar synthetic material. The videos were posted on March 20 and 21, respectively.
Two independent synthetic audio detection tools, Hiya and Undetectable AI, analyzed the recordings and concluded with high certainty that the audio was artificially generated rather than authentic speech from the Japanese prime minister.
The fabricated videos emerged in the context of genuine diplomatic tension following Trump’s Pearl Harbor reference during the official meeting. According to Al Jazeera’s reporting on the incident, public reaction to Trump’s comment was mixed, with some Japanese citizens praising Takaichi’s composure while others criticized her for not more forcefully responding to the historically sensitive remark.
Despite the awkward moment, the diplomatic meeting concluded with the announcement of a substantial $550 billion Japanese investment in the United States, suggesting the official relationship between the two nations remains intact.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of deepfake technology in international relations and news consumption. Increasingly sophisticated AI tools can create convincing fake videos that superimpose fabricated statements onto footage of real public figures, potentially inflaming diplomatic situations or spreading misinformation during sensitive geopolitical moments.
Notably, Prime Minister Takaichi has not made any public statements matching those in the fabricated videos regarding her U.S. visit or the Pearl Harbor comment. The viral deepfakes appear designed to amplify tensions between the two nations by suggesting a more dramatic diplomatic fallout than actually occurred.
As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent and difficult to detect, media literacy experts emphasize the importance of verifying information through multiple reliable sources, particularly when inflammatory content emerges during high-profile diplomatic engagements.
The incident serves as a reminder that digital content purporting to show world leaders making provocative statements should be approached with heightened skepticism, especially when such content appears exclusively on social media platforms rather than through official channels or established news organizations.
