The controversy surrounding Charlie Kirk’s statements has intensified since his death on September 10, with social media users sharing and often misrepresenting remarks attributed to the conservative activist. As founder of youth political organization Turning Point USA, Kirk made numerous controversial statements throughout his career that have now come under renewed scrutiny.
A viral post on X falsely claimed Kirk used an anti-Asian slur during a heated exchange. The post, which garnered over 16 million views in less than 48 hours, included a video that purportedly showed Kirk using the slur while addressing an Asian woman. However, fact-checkers have confirmed that Kirk was actually shouting at Cenk Uygur, co-host of progressive news show The Young Turks, during a 2018 Politicon debate. Kirk was saying Uygur’s first name, not using a racial slur.
Kirk did, however, express controversial views about the Civil Rights Act of 1964. During Turning Point’s December 2023 America Fest conference, Kirk called the landmark legislation a “huge mistake,” arguing it led to a “permanent DEI-type bureaucracy” that limited free speech. According to a Wired report confirmed by on-site journalists, Kirk also described Martin Luther King Jr. as “awful” and “not a good person” during the same event.
When questioned about these statements by Wired, Kirk acknowledged them as accurate, saying it was “true” that he described King as “a bad guy” and that passing the Civil Rights Act was a mistake. Kirk later elaborated on these views in an 82-minute podcast episode titled “The Myth of MLK.” In April 2024, he described the legislation as having “created a beast, and that beast has now turned into an anti-white weapon.”
Regarding allegations of antisemitic comments, Kirk repeatedly made controversial statements about Jewish funding of liberal causes. Following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, Kirk claimed on his podcast that “Jewish donors have been the No. 1 funding mechanism of radical, open border neoliberal quasi-Marxist policies, cultural institutions and nonprofits.” He later added that “Jews have been some of the largest funders of cultural Marxist ideas” and argued that “some of the largest financiers of left-wing, anti-white causes have been Jewish Americans.”
Kirk’s use of the term “cultural Marxism” is particularly notable, as the Southern Poverty Law Center considers it an antisemitic conspiracy theory. While sometimes used colloquially without antisemitic intent, the Antisemitism Policy Trust warns that it is “a shadowy term openly used by antisemites, neo-Nazis and others with nefarious intentions.”
In June 2024, Kirk generated controversy when discussing LGBTQ+ issues and Biblical scripture. Responding to YouTube personality Ms. Rachel’s video about loving all neighbors, Kirk referenced Leviticus 18, saying: “thou shall lay with another man shall be stoned to death.” This comment led author Stephen King to initially accuse Kirk of advocating violence against gay people, though King later retracted and apologized, saying Kirk was demonstrating “how some people cherry-pick Biblical passages.”
On gun violence, Kirk took an unapologetic stance during a 2023 TPUSA Faith event in Utah, days after a school shooting in Nashville. Kirk defended the Second Amendment, stating: “I think it’s worth it… to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.”
Following the October 2022 hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Kirk suggested someone should bail out the assailant, David DePape. While calling the attack “awful” and “not right,” Kirk questioned why DePape remained in jail when, he claimed, people in Chicago could “commit murder and be out the next day.” DePape was later convicted on assault and kidnapping charges in federal and state trials, receiving a 30-year federal prison sentence and life without parole from state courts.
As the public continues to examine Kirk’s legacy, the challenge remains to accurately represent his statements while providing proper context for his often controversial views.

I agree, nuance and objectivity are needed when assessing public figures’ statements. Jumping to conclusions without thoroughly examining the evidence often leads to further polarization.
The reported comments about the Civil Rights Act are certainly controversial and warrant closer examination. I’m curious to hear Kirk’s full reasoning, as legislation of that significance usually has complex impacts that merit thoughtful discussion.
Reasonable people can disagree on the effects of major laws like the Civil Rights Act. While Kirk’s views may be unpopular, I think it’s important to engage with them respectfully rather than dismiss them outright.
I’m interested to see how this controversy evolves and how Kirk’s supporters and critics respond. These types of issues often become highly polarized, but I hope there is still room for reasonable people to engage in substantive, evidence-based discussion.
These types of controversies underscore the need for more civil and nuanced political discourse. While I may disagree with Kirk’s views, responding with knee-jerk outrage or unsubstantiated claims is unlikely to be productive. We should strive for a higher level of debate.
