A suspicious listing of Poland’s Virtuti Militari order on a Ukrainian collectors’ website has been identified as a likely Russian provocation aimed at damaging Polish-Ukrainian relations, according to Ukrainian officials.

Oleksandr Alfyorov, head of Ukraine’s Institute of National Remembrance, addressed the controversy during a recent interview with a Ukrainian media outlet, emphasizing that Russian disinformation efforts targeting the partnership between Ukraine and Poland have intensified significantly.

“Russian disinformation has intensified to the maximum today. We see active spread of anti-Ukrainian theses. What the Virtuti Militari story was worth… This was an anti-Ukrainian provocation that clearly has Russian fingerprints,” Alfyorov stated.

The Virtuti Militari is Poland’s highest military decoration, established in 1792 and awarded for exceptional military valor. Its appearance on a Ukrainian auction site triggered immediate concern among Polish authorities and prompted swift diplomatic action.

Within 24 hours of the listing’s discovery, Alfyorov confirmed that Ukrainian officials had clarified the situation and established contact with their Polish counterparts. He assured that the item—believed to be either a copy or counterfeit—would be transferred to Polish authorities.

Alfyorov suggested one possible explanation for the item’s origin: “A copy from the real order, which is in the possession of the family of the Polish officer killed in the so-called Katyn massacre, could have been made by that very military officer himself—such stories are also known.” The Katyn massacre refers to the mass execution of Polish military officers by Soviet forces in 1940, a historical tragedy that has long affected Polish-Russian relations.

The incident drew immediate reactions from Polish officials. The Polish Institute of National Remembrance issued a formal protest against the auction and called for the item’s return to Poland. Piotr Lukaszewicz, Poland’s temporary chargé d’affaires in Ukraine, confirmed via social media that the Polish Embassy was investigating the matter while maintaining contact with relevant Ukrainian authorities.

Lukaszewicz cautioned the public about the need for fact-checking in such situations, warning that unverified information could inadvertently serve propaganda interests aimed at undermining Polish-Ukrainian cooperation.

Wlodzimierz Czachasty, Marshal of the Polish Sejm (lower house of parliament), placed the incident in a broader context, asserting that Russia is conducting targeted anti-Ukrainian campaigns within Poland. However, he expressed confidence in Polish citizens’ ability to recognize such manipulation, stating that Poles “will not let themselves be deceived.”

The resolution came with the transfer of the controversial item to the Polish Embassy in Ukraine, effectively ending the immediate diplomatic concern.

This incident illustrates the increasingly sophisticated nature of information warfare in Eastern Europe, where historical symbols and cultural sensitivities are exploited to create friction between neighboring states. Russian disinformation campaigns frequently target the relationship between Poland and Ukraine, two countries whose strong alliance presents a significant obstacle to Russian geopolitical interests in the region.

Experts note that such provocations often leverage historical tensions between Ukraine and Poland—particularly surrounding sensitive topics like the World War II-era Volyn massacres—to undermine their united front against Russian aggression following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The swift and coordinated response by both Ukrainian and Polish officials demonstrates the growing resilience of the alliance against such information warfare tactics, as both nations remain committed to maintaining strong bilateral relations despite occasional provocations.
