Russian disinformation campaigns continue to target Ukraine’s international military support, with a recent fabricated story claiming Denmark is recalling F-16 fighter jets from Ukraine to relocate them to Greenland, according to Ukrainian officials.

The Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has issued an alert about this latest wave of false information. Russian propagandists reportedly manipulated content from Danish television channel TV2 Nord, replacing the original audio track with fabricated content featuring host Pia Beltoft supposedly announcing Denmark’s plans to withdraw the fighter jets due to statements made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“This information is completely inaccurate,” the Ukrainian disinformation center stated in their announcement. Officials confirmed there have been no such reports on TV2 Nord’s official website or social media channels, nor has the Danish Ministry of Defense issued any statements regarding the withdrawal of F-16s provided to Ukraine.

The fabricated story appears designed to create anxiety about Western commitment to Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The F-16 fighter jets represent a critical enhancement to Ukraine’s air force in its ongoing defense against Russian aggression. After months of diplomatic negotiations and training of Ukrainian pilots, the delivery of these advanced aircraft has been celebrated as a significant milestone in international support for Ukraine.

According to the Center for Countering Disinformation, this latest disinformation effort is being distributed across multiple languages, indicating a coordinated campaign rather than isolated incidents. The primary objective appears to be undermining Ukrainians’ trust in their international partners while creating the impression that Western nations are prioritizing their own interests over continued support for Ukraine’s defense.

This isn’t the first time Russian propaganda has targeted Ukraine’s international relationships. The center noted that previous fabricated narratives included claims about a nonexistent “secret agreement” between Ukraine, Germany, and France regarding Greenland. These disinformation efforts frequently involve sophisticated manipulation of video and audio materials to present fabricated content as legitimate news.

Information security experts have long warned about the increasing sophistication of such disinformation tactics. By taking fragments of official broadcasts and altering their context or content, propagandists can create convincing but entirely false narratives that spread quickly through social media channels before they can be officially debunked.

The Ukrainian disinformation center emphasized the importance of verifying information through official defense sources and established media outlets rather than relying on unverified social media posts. This case highlights the ongoing information warfare dimension of the conflict, where perception and public confidence can be targeted as aggressively as physical infrastructure.

Ukrainian authorities noted that such disinformation activities may constitute criminal offenses under Ukrainian law, including Article 345 regarding threats against law enforcement officers and Article 194 concerning deliberate destruction or damage to property. The center confirmed that relevant information has been forwarded to the National Police of Ukraine.

As Ukraine continues to rely on international military aid in its defense against Russian aggression, maintaining clear communication channels and swiftly addressing disinformation has become a crucial component of the country’s overall defense strategy. The targeting of F-16 deliveries with false information underscores the strategic importance of these aircraft to Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

International partners, including Denmark and other F-16 donor countries, have consistently reiterated their ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through continued military assistance programs.
