Turkish Journalist Arrested on Disinformation Charges Over Investigative Reports
A court in Ankara ordered the detention of BirGün daily journalist İsmail Arı on Sunday, charging him with “publicly disseminating misleading information,” in a case that has sparked widespread condemnation from press freedom advocates domestically and internationally.
Arı was taken into custody Saturday evening in Turkey’s northern Tokat province and subsequently transferred to Ankara, where a magistrate court ordered him jailed pending trial. The court made this decision at the request of the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office without taking Arı’s statement.
Through his legal representatives, Arı indicated that his detention stemmed from video content broadcast three months ago. “They have been looking for a pretext to arrest me for the past year,” he stated, suggesting a pattern of harassment against his journalistic work.
During questioning by Ankara police, authorities focused on four specific pieces of Arı’s reporting and social media activity. These included a video investigation into foundations connected to family members of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, coverage of alleged corruption at the state-operated Yunus Emre Institute, reporting on a dormitory construction project on protected cultural heritage land near President Erdoğan’s former religious school, and coverage of judicial appointments.
The case against Arı has been building for some time. He was recently indicted following his reporting on alleged financial impropriety at the Yunus Emre Institute, a government organization promoting Turkish culture internationally. The indictment accused him of “creating the perception of involvement in corruption,” following a formal complaint from Rahmi Göktaş, the institute’s former deputy chairman who is married to Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Göktaş.
Arı has firmly rejected all allegations, maintaining that his reporting relied exclusively on publicly available information and should be protected under press freedom guarantees. His defense characterizes the case as an attempt to criminalize legitimate investigative journalism.
The arrest has triggered immediate backlash across Turkey’s journalism community and from international organizations. The Turkish Journalists Union (TGS) issued a strong statement condemning the detention, arguing that such legal actions against reporters have created a system that “hardly differs from a system of hostile law.” The organization called for authorities to respect press freedom principles, cease undermining the public’s right to information, and release all imprisoned journalists.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) framed Arı’s detention within a broader context, describing it as part of “a political project aimed at dismantling investigative journalism through judicial means.” The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also weighed in, urging Turkish authorities to release Arı immediately and stop what they characterized as misuse of the country’s disinformation law to target journalists.
The case has drawn political attention as well. Celal Fırat, an opposition lawmaker from the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), filed a parliamentary inquiry directed at Justice Minister Akın Gürlek. The inquiry questions the specific basis for the investigation into Arı, why his work wasn’t recognized as protected journalistic activity, and the grounds for including his Yunus Emre Institute corruption reporting in the case.
Public demonstrations have emerged in both İstanbul and Ankara, with journalists, press organizations, and opposition politicians joining together to demand Arı’s immediate release.
Arı’s detention adds to Turkey’s troubling press freedom record. According to Expression Interrupted, an independent monitoring organization, 29 journalists are currently imprisoned in Turkey. The country ranks 159th out of 180 nations in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, reflecting a media landscape that has significantly deteriorated in recent years.
The case highlights ongoing tensions between Turkish authorities and independent media, particularly journalists investigating allegations of corruption or misconduct involving government officials or institutions connected to the ruling administration.

This case highlights the delicate balance between free speech and public order. While journalists must be able to report freely, the spread of genuine misinformation can also undermine trust. I hope a fair, transparent process determines the truth here.
Troubling news. Journalists must be able to report on issues of public interest without fear of retaliation. I hope this case is resolved fairly and that the authorities respect the journalist’s rights and the important role of a free press.
The arrest of this journalist on ‘disinformation’ charges is very concerning. Investigative reporting plays a vital role in holding leaders accountable. I hope this case does not reflect a broader crackdown on press freedoms in Turkey.
Me too. Press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, and journalists must be able to do their jobs without fear of reprisal.
Journalists should be able to do their job without fear of arrest or persecution. Reporting on potential wrongdoing by officials is in the public interest. I hope this case does not set a precedent for further crackdowns on the media in Turkey.
Concerning to see a journalist arrested for their reporting, even if the authorities claim it was ‘disinformation.’ A free press is essential for accountability. I hope this case is resolved in a way that upholds press freedoms and the public’s right to information.
This is a worrying development for press freedom. Arresting journalists on ‘disinformation’ charges is a concerning tactic to silence critical reporting. I hope there is a fair trial and due process, and that this journalist is able to continue his investigative work without fear of retaliation.
The arrest of this journalist is deeply concerning. Investigations into potential conflicts of interest and corruption should be welcomed, not punished. I hope the international community closely monitors this case and speaks out against any infringement on press freedoms.
I agree, press freedom is essential for a healthy democracy. Silencing critical voices through dubious legal means is extremely worrying.
Interesting case highlighting the challenges journalists face in Turkey. Reporting on corruption and potential conflicts of interest can be risky, but it’s crucial for holding leaders accountable. Hopefully this journalist’s rights are protected and he can continue his important work.
