Turkey Denies Claims of Siding with Iran in Regional Conflict

Turkey’s Communications Presidency has firmly rejected circulating rumors that the country would align with Iran in a potential U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict or make military incursions into Lebanon. In a statement released Monday, the Center for Countering Disinformation dismissed these claims as deliberate misinformation.

“Turkey has stated from the beginning that it is not a party to the war,” the center emphasized. The statement highlighted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending hostilities, preventing the conflict’s expansion, and establishing lasting peace in the region.

The center warned that such false information constitutes psychological warfare designed to undermine Turkey’s international image and diminish its constructive role in crisis mediation. Officials urged the public to rely solely on statements from authorized government sources rather than unsubstantiated social media claims.

Earlier this month, President Erdoğan expressed Turkey’s position during discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, stressing Ankara’s desire to remain neutral in the escalating regional tensions. This diplomatic stance aligns with Turkey’s broader foreign policy objectives of maintaining stability in the Middle East.

In a speech last Thursday at an event organized by his Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Erdoğan criticized sectarian approaches to the conflict. “There is no difference between bloodshed in Iran, Gulf countries, or Lebanon. Everyone mercilessly slaughtered is our brothers and sisters,” he stated, condemning those who view the situation through a Sunni-Shiite divide.

The Turkish president further warned against “inciting sectarian division” and “serving the Zionist agenda of dividing and conquering,” reflecting his government’s consistent opposition to Israeli policies in the region. He described the current situation as the “most difficult period of the last century” for the Middle East.

Erdoğan’s comments referenced Israel’s February 28 operations against Iran, which he characterized as continuing to “drown our region in blood and the smell of gunpowder.” He emphasized that innocent children in schools have become targets, highlighting the humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict.

“What is the difference between the tears shed in Isfahan, Tabriz, and Tehran and those shed in Beirut, Doha, and Riyadh?” Erdoğan asked rhetorically, underscoring his view that sectarian differences should not matter when civilian lives are at stake. “Whether in Iran or the Gulf, are we not the ones harmed by every missile fired?”

Turkey currently maintains diplomatic relationships with all parties involved in the regional tensions except Israel, with whom relations have deteriorated significantly in recent years. The statement from the Center for Countering Disinformation comes at a time when Turkey is attempting to position itself as a potential mediator in the increasingly volatile Middle East.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged Turkey’s stance last Wednesday, tweeting that “the brotherly Turkish nation played an important role in solidarity with the Muslim ummah for years.” His comments suggest that Iran values Turkey’s position of neutrality and its refusal to join any anti-Iran coalition.

Analysts note that Turkey’s approach reflects its complex geopolitical position – balancing relationships with Western allies while maintaining ties with regional powers like Iran. This diplomatic balancing act has become increasingly challenging as tensions escalate between the U.S.-Israel alliance and Iran.

As regional instability grows, Turkey’s insistence on remaining neutral while advocating for de-escalation represents a significant diplomatic stance in a rapidly evolving crisis that threatens to engulf the broader Middle East.
