Türkiye’s Digital Media Development Authority on Tuesday firmly rejected claims suggesting the country provides logistical support to Israel, calling such allegations “baseless” and “deliberately misleading.”
The authority, which oversees efforts to combat digital misinformation, issued a statement addressing viral social media posts that alleged Türkiye was facilitating Israeli military operations through logistical assistance. These claims have gained traction amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly as Israel continues its military campaign in Gaza.
“These unfounded allegations are being systematically circulated to damage Türkiye’s international reputation and undermine its principled stance on the Palestinian issue,” the authority stated. Officials emphasized that Türkiye has consistently maintained a clear position supporting Palestinian rights and condemning Israeli military actions in Gaza.
The statement highlighted that Türkiye was among the first nations to denounce Israel’s military operations in Gaza following the October 7 attacks last year. Since then, the Turkish government has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians.
Relations between Türkiye and Israel have deteriorated significantly over the past year. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been vocal in his criticism of Israeli policies, comparing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions to those of Nazi Germany—rhetoric that has further strained diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Türkiye has also taken concrete steps to demonstrate its stance, including suspending trade agreements with Israel and implementing restrictions on exports to the country. The Turkish government has additionally supported South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
“The circulation of such false information appears to be part of a coordinated disinformation campaign intended to create confusion about Türkiye’s unwavering support for Palestine,” the Digital Media Development Authority noted in its statement.
Regional analysts suggest that the spread of such allegations comes at a particularly sensitive time, as Türkiye attempts to position itself as a potential mediator in the broader Middle East conflict while maintaining its strong pro-Palestinian position. The country has historically sought to balance its relationships in the region, though its ties with Israel have become increasingly fraught.
“This pattern of disinformation attempts to drive a wedge between Türkiye and its allies in the Muslim world by falsely portraying it as duplicitous in its stance toward the Palestinian cause,” said Dr. Mehmet Yılmaz, an international relations expert at Ankara University.
The Digital Media Development Authority has urged citizens to verify information from official sources and remain vigilant against misleading content on social media platforms. The agency was established in 2022 with the specific mandate of identifying and countering disinformation campaigns that could potentially harm national security or social cohesion.
Türkiye has been one of the most outspoken critics of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which have resulted in over 35,000 Palestinian casualties according to health authorities in Gaza. The Turkish government has also been active in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, sending medical supplies and essential goods via Egypt.
The country’s strategic position as a NATO member with strong ties to both Western nations and the Muslim world has placed it in a complex diplomatic situation. However, officials maintain that Türkiye’s position on the Palestinian issue remains consistent and principled.
“Those spreading such false allegations aim to undermine Türkiye’s humanitarian efforts and diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in the region,” the authority concluded in its statement, reaffirming the country’s commitment to supporting Palestinian rights and working toward a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
