Turkish authorities have dismissed widespread claims of submarine missile activity near the Karpasia peninsula, labeling the viral social media reports as misleading and inaccurate.

The Disinformation Monitoring and Assessment Centre (DMM), operating under Turkey’s Presidency Directorate of Communications, issued a definitive statement after investigating footage that had rapidly spread across Turkish social media platforms. According to the DMM, the alleged missile launches did not occur in Turkish territorial waters or in areas Turkey considers to be territorial waters of the self-proclaimed “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” (TRNC) – an entity recognized only by Turkey.

After analyzing the widely shared video, the watchdog clarified that while missile launches were visible in the footage, they took place in international waters rather than in the specific location claimed in the viral posts. The DMM urged citizens to disregard what it characterized as deliberately misleading content designed to manipulate public perception.

“The public should rely exclusively on statements from competent authorities and ignore unfounded claims circulating online,” the statement emphasized.

The controversy began when several Turkish social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter) shared video footage allegedly showing multiple missile launches from a submarine operating near the Karpasia peninsula, a remote area in the northeastern part of Cyprus. The posts claimed the activity occurred within “TRNC territorial waters” and that a Turkish Cypriot fisherman had captured the dramatic scene on camera.

The footage quickly gained traction, spreading across numerous Turkish Cypriot and Turkish media outlets before authorities intervened with their clarification.

Turkish-Cypriot news website Kıbrıs Postası had also published a report citing what it described as reliable Turkish military sources, who similarly stated that the recorded activity had taken place in international waters, beyond both Turkish and “TRNC” territorial boundaries. These sources referred to a “floating vessel” operating in international waters, though they provided no additional details about the vessel’s identity or purpose.

The incident highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding maritime activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region marked by complex territorial disputes and competing claims. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following a Turkish military intervention in response to a Greek-backed coup. The internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus exercises control over the southern part of the island, while the northern portion is administered by the “TRNC.”

Maritime boundaries in the region have become increasingly contentious in recent years, particularly following discoveries of significant natural gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean. These discoveries have heightened tensions among regional powers, including Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and Egypt, all of whom have competing interests in exploiting these resources.

The swift response from Turkey’s official disinformation watchdog underscores the authorities’ concerns about how misinformation regarding military activities could potentially escalate regional tensions or create diplomatic complications. By issuing a clear denial, Turkish officials appear to be attempting to prevent any misunderstandings that might arise from the viral footage.

The Karpasia peninsula, where the incident allegedly took place, is a strategically significant area extending into the Eastern Mediterranean. Its location makes it geopolitically relevant to regional security dynamics and maritime operations in waters that have seen increased military presence in recent years.

As geopolitical competition in the Eastern Mediterranean continues to evolve, incidents like this highlight how quickly unverified information can spread and potentially impact regional perceptions, emphasizing the critical role official verification channels now play in contemporary security environments.
