The Philippine government has launched a crackdown on what it calls a “coordinated” disinformation campaign spreading false claims about President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s health. Malacañang Palace officials announced Thursday they are gathering evidence to pursue legal action against individuals propagating rumors that the President is suffering from stage four colon cancer or is comatose.

Presidential Communications Secretary Dave Gomez condemned the proliferation of these health-related rumors on social media platforms, describing them as “outright lies” designed to “distract and destabilize” the government. Despite numerous official statements and recent video appearances by Marcos, some social media users continue to claim that such footage is either manipulated or outdated.

“The timing is suspect. Why the sudden surge at this time? Why resort to outright lies? Why the desperation?” Gomez questioned in an official statement. “The Presidential Communications Office is tracking and documenting every post, every comment, and every lie. Each one is a piece of evidence we can use in court.”

Gomez indicated that authorities aim to complete their evidence gathering by next week, at which point they plan to identify perpetrators, trace their networks, and file appropriate charges. The communications secretary emphasized that the President remains focused on addressing the nation’s energy emergency, which was declared in response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The rumors gained traction after Marcos was diagnosed with diverticulitis, an inflammation of the large intestine, in January. Although the President clarified that his condition was not life-threatening, opposition figures have continued to question his health status across various social media platforms.

In an effort to quell speculation, Marcos appeared in a video interview released Wednesday by PCO Undersecretary Claire Castro. “I want to thank those who are concerned about me. Do not take (the rumors) seriously. You know, social media tends to be humorous,” the President stated in the interview, adding that he has returned to his regular schedule for “the last two or three months.”

National Bureau of Investigation spokesman and attorney Palmer Mallari supported the government’s position in a Thursday interview on the One PH program “Sa Totoo Lang,” suggesting that the spread of false information regarding the President’s health could indeed be part of a coordinated destabilization effort against the Marcos administration.

The situation highlights growing concerns about misinformation in Philippine politics, where social media platforms have become battlegrounds for political narratives. The Philippines has one of the highest social media usage rates globally, making it particularly susceptible to rapid dissemination of unverified information.

This alleged disinformation campaign comes at a critical time for the Marcos administration, which is currently managing multiple crises including energy security challenges related to Middle East tensions. Government officials argue that these fabricated health rumors are specifically timed to undermine public confidence in leadership during a period requiring political stability.

The Philippine government has previously faced criticism from press freedom advocates for its approach to combating misinformation, with some arguing that anti-fake news measures could potentially infringe on legitimate free speech. However, officials maintain that deliberately false information about the President’s health represents a national security concern rather than protected political discourse.

As the investigation proceeds, the incident underscores the increasingly complex relationship between social media, political communication, and governance in the digital age.
