Russia Exploits “Epstein Files” to Spread Disinformation in Italian Media

Russian state actors and aligned channels have successfully leveraged the release of the “Epstein files” to disseminate manipulative information to Italian-speaking audiences, according to a comprehensive analysis of recent disinformation activities.

The campaign, which unfolded during the first weeks of February, represents a sophisticated example of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) – a practice where the Kremlin has developed unparalleled expertise since the formal establishment of “dezinformatsiya” operations in 1923.

Researchers identified a multi-layered network of channels spreading anti-Western narratives tied to the Epstein case. These ranged from official Russian state channels like the Foreign Ministry to state-controlled outlets such as Russia Today and TASS, alongside numerous “state-aligned” entities including Italian news websites, Telegram channels, and social media accounts.

“The Kremlin exploited the unique mediatic resonance offered by the Epstein files to spread manipulated information to a receptive audience,” notes the analysis. “If unanswered, such campaigns could ultimately impact both national and supranational institutions’ reputation and conduct.”

The timing proved particularly opportune, as countless journalists and conspiracy theorists were already examining the newly released Epstein documents – creating an environment ripe for the introduction of misleading narratives.

The investigation, which employed several analytical methodologies including the ABCDE framework and the DISARM Red framework, found that Russian-aligned channels primarily deployed two types of narratives: “anti-West” content condemning alleged moral corruption among Western elites, and “conspiracy” content linking Epstein to various conspiracy theories.

One recurring target was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with narratives attempting to link him to Epstein’s crimes. Other content focused on portraying Western political, financial, and industrial leaders as corrupt and perverted, while suggesting mainstream media was deliberately ignoring these accusations.

Particularly concerning was the finding that these narratives circulated not only through Russian-controlled channels but emerged simultaneously across Italian media. This suggests that certain Italian communities have become highly receptive to such disinformation.

“Italian institutions are thus faced with a threat actor that is not merely manipulating the country’s information landscape, but quite literally satisfying a spontaneous and significant demand for disinformation,” the researchers concluded.

The campaign successfully spread across multiple platforms and communities, potentially reaching hundreds of thousands of Italian speakers. While it didn’t penetrate mainstream media or trigger policy responses, it effectively exacerbated social divisions and undermined trust in Western institutions.

According to the analysis, this approach aligns with Russia’s established FIMI strategy of exploiting pre-existing societal divisions and capitalizing on high-profile events that capture public attention.

The findings highlight ongoing vulnerabilities in Europe’s information ecosystem, despite recent legislative efforts like the Digital Services Act. By eroding public trust in democratic institutions and fostering anti-establishment sentiment, such campaigns can undermine social cohesion and potentially reverse regional integration efforts – ultimately serving Russia’s strategic interests.

Experts warn that without improved resilience measures and media literacy, similar disinformation campaigns will continue to find fertile ground among susceptible audiences across Europe.
