Russia May Be Preparing New Mass Strike on Ukraine, Official Warns

Russian authorities may be preparing a new large-scale strike against Ukraine, according to a warning issued on March 23 by Andriy Kovalenko, who heads the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.

“The enemy may be preparing a strike. Pay close attention to air raid alerts,” Kovalenko cautioned in a message posted to his Telegram channel. The warning comes just over a week after Russia’s most recent major combined assault on Ukrainian territory.

On March 14, Russian forces launched what Ukrainian officials described as a coordinated attack involving 68 missiles and 430 drones across Ukraine. The operation primarily targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding oblast, causing significant damage to the power grid and forcing emergency outages throughout the capital and neighboring communities.

The March 14 attack claimed five lives and left more than 20 people injured in Kyiv Oblast alone. Four fatalities were reported in Brovary, a satellite city east of Kyiv. The barrage triggered fires and caused extensive destruction in multiple communities including Obukhiv, Novi Petrivtsi, Ukrainka, and others throughout the region.

The assault followed Russia’s established pattern of targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, which has been a hallmark of its campaign against Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. These attacks typically intensify during the colder months to maximize pressure on Ukraine’s population by disrupting heating and electrical systems.

Energy infrastructure has remained particularly vulnerable, with Ukraine’s power generation capacity significantly diminished after more than two years of targeted strikes. The country’s ability to quickly repair damaged facilities has been stretched thin by the relentless nature of these attacks.

Military analysts suggest Russia may be timing its strikes to coincide with periods when Ukraine’s air defense systems are under particular strain or when recently delivered Western equipment hasn’t yet been fully integrated into defensive networks. The warning from Ukrainian officials indicates intelligence may have detected preparations for another such coordinated assault.

Ukraine has repeatedly called for additional air defense systems from its Western partners to better protect its cities and critical infrastructure. While several advanced systems have been delivered, including Patriot batteries and NASAMS units, the country’s defensive needs remain substantial given the scale of Russian aerial attacks.

Civilians in Ukraine have grown accustomed to responding quickly to air raid alerts, with many maintaining emergency supplies and identifying nearby shelters as part of their daily routine. Local authorities continue to urge residents to take all warnings seriously and follow established safety protocols during alerts.

The potential new strike comes amid ongoing heavy fighting in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have been gradually advancing in several sectors of the front line in recent months. Ukrainian military officials have reported ammunition shortages and challenges in maintaining defensive positions as Russia continues to commit significant resources to the conflict.

International observers will be closely monitoring developments in the coming days as Ukraine braces for what could be another significant escalation in Russia’s aerial campaign against the country’s civilian infrastructure and urban centers.
