France’s intelligence services have uncovered a coordinated disinformation campaign linked to Russian interests aimed at smearing President Emmanuel Macron by falsely connecting him to Jeffrey Epstein, a government source revealed on Tuesday.

The operation attempted to fabricate ties between Macron and Epstein, the disgraced American financier who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. According to the source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the intelligence, the campaign represented a sophisticated effort to undermine the French president’s credibility both domestically and internationally.

“Our intelligence agencies have identified clear fingerprints of Russian involvement in this operation,” the source told reporters. “This is part of a broader pattern of information warfare targeting Western democracies.”

The disinformation campaign reportedly began circulating on fringe websites and social media platforms before attempting to gain traction in more mainstream channels. It included digitally manipulated images and fabricated documents purporting to show connections between Macron and Epstein’s network.

French security services detected the operation during routine monitoring of foreign influence activities ahead of upcoming European elections. The timing suggests a deliberate attempt to influence French politics during a period of heightened electoral sensitivity, when Macron’s centrist coalition faces challenges from both far-right and left-wing parties.

This incident represents the latest chapter in deteriorating relations between Paris and Moscow, which have reached their lowest point since the Cold War following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. France has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine, providing military aid and backing European sanctions against Russia.

Media analysis experts note that the tactics employed in this campaign mirror previous Russian disinformation operations targeting other Western leaders. Professor Marie Dubois from the Paris Institute of Political Studies explained that such operations typically blend falsehoods with limited factual elements to create plausible-sounding narratives.

“The strategy relies on exploiting existing public concerns or controversies,” Dubois said. “In this case, they’re attempting to leverage the genuine outrage surrounding Epstein to tarnish an unrelated political figure.”

The French government has implemented enhanced counter-measures against foreign interference since 2017, when Macron’s presidential campaign suffered a massive hack and data dump just days before the election. Those documents, also allegedly linked to Russian actors, were released too late to significantly impact the electoral outcome.

France’s cyber-defense agency, ANSSI, has worked closely with social media platforms to limit the spread of the false Epstein-related claims. Major platforms including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have been alerted to the campaign and are monitoring for related content.

International allies have expressed solidarity with France following the revelation. A U.S. State Department spokesperson condemned “malign influence operations designed to undermine democratic institutions and processes.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the accusations as “baseless” and “another example of Russophobic hysteria” when reached for comment by international news agencies.

The Epstein case remains politically sensitive worldwide. The American financier’s connections to powerful figures across politics, business, and entertainment continue to fuel legitimate investigations alongside conspiracy theories. Several high-profile individuals have faced genuine scrutiny for their associations with Epstein, making it a fertile ground for disinformation campaigns targeting unconnected public figures.

French digital literacy advocates have emphasized the importance of media skepticism in response to the incident. “This underscores why critical evaluation of sources is essential in our information ecosystem,” said Jean-Michel Renard of Digital Citizens France. “Particularly when allegations appear designed specifically to provoke emotional rather than rational responses.”

The French government has not yet decided whether to publicly release evidence of Russian involvement, weighing transparency concerns against the risk of revealing intelligence gathering methods. For now, officials are focusing on containing the spread of the false claims while preparing for potential escalation of information warfare activities as European elections approach.
