Russia has vehemently rejected the U.S. State Department’s recent statement claiming that Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny died as a result of poisoning, describing the allegation as “disinformation” and a “mockery of the dead.”

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova launched a scathing critique of the U.S. position, characterizing it as part of a broader pattern of false accusations against Moscow.

“Washington continues to spread disinformation about the circumstances of Alexei Navalny’s death,” Zakharova stated. “This latest episode demonstrates their willingness to exploit any tragedy for political purposes, even if it means disrespecting the deceased.”

The diplomatic clash comes just days after the U.S. State Department released findings suggesting Navalny had been poisoned while in Russian custody. Navalny, who was President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic, died in February at the Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence on charges widely considered politically motivated.

Russian officials have maintained that Navalny died of natural causes, specifically citing “sudden death syndrome” in their official reports. The Kremlin has consistently denied any involvement in his death, with President Putin rarely mentioning Navalny by name in public appearances.

The controversy marks another low point in already strained U.S.-Russia relations, which have deteriorated significantly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Western nations, including the United States, have implemented unprecedented sanctions against Russia in response to the ongoing conflict.

Navalny’s death sent shockwaves through Russia’s opposition movement and sparked international condemnation. His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, has publicly accused Putin of responsibility for her husband’s death and vowed to continue his political work.

Independent human rights organizations have raised serious concerns about the Russian government’s handling of the case. Amnesty International has called for a transparent international investigation into Navalny’s death, describing the official Russian explanation as “wholly inadequate.”

This is not the first time Navalny has been the subject of poisoning allegations. In 2020, he fell ill during a domestic flight in Russia and was subsequently treated in Germany, where doctors concluded he had been poisoned with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent. The Kremlin denied involvement in that incident as well.

The diplomatic row over Navalny’s death comes amid increasing isolation for Russia on the world stage. The country has been suspended from multiple international organizations and faces continued pressure over its actions in Ukraine, human rights record, and treatment of political opposition.

Political analysts suggest the Kremlin’s forceful rejection of the poisoning claims is part of a broader strategy to maintain control over the domestic narrative surrounding Navalny’s death. Russian state media has largely minimized coverage of both Navalny and international reactions to his passing.

“The Kremlin is primarily concerned with managing domestic perceptions,” said Anton Barbashin, a political analyst with the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. “By framing Western claims as deliberate disinformation, they’re attempting to discredit any challenge to the official narrative.”

The European Union has joined the United States in demanding accountability for Navalny’s death. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has called for “an independent and transparent international investigation” into the circumstances surrounding the opposition leader’s demise.

Meanwhile, Navalny’s political movement continues its work from abroad, with many of his closest allies having fled Russia to avoid prosecution. The organization remains banned as “extremist” within Russia itself, making any public support for it a potentially criminal offense.

As diplomatic tensions persist, observers note that the dispute over Navalny’s death represents more than just a disagreement over facts—it symbolizes the fundamentally different worldviews held by Moscow and Western capitals regarding political opposition, human rights, and international accountability.

  2. Russia’s dismissal of the US allegations as ‘disinformation’ is not surprising, but it doesn’t really address the substance of the claims. An independent, international inquiry could help shed light on what actually happened to Navalny.
