Russian propagandists have launched a sophisticated disinformation campaign targeting European audiences through counterfeit videos designed to mimic trusted Western media outlets, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation reported on January 20.

The fabricated videos, circulating widely on Russian Telegram channels, falsely appear to be authentic reports from respected organizations including Euronews, Gallup, and The Economist. These deceptive materials share a common narrative: that financial and military support for Ukraine is allegedly devastating European economies, forcing businesses to close, and driving younger generations to support leaving the European Union.

According to Ukrainian officials, none of these videos exist on the legitimate platforms of the publications they claim to represent. Instead, Russian operatives have carefully replicated the visual styles, logos, and presentation formats of these trusted media sources to create an illusion of credibility and journalistic authority.

“This represents a calculated effort to undermine Western solidarity with Ukraine,” said a spokesperson from the Center for Countering Disinformation, who requested anonymity due to security concerns. “By disguising propaganda as legitimate reporting, these actors aim to sow doubt and division among European citizens.”

The campaign appears designed to accomplish multiple strategic objectives: eroding public support for Ukraine’s defense efforts, fostering distrust in European institutions, and deflecting blame for economic challenges away from Russia’s military aggression.

This wave of disinformation comes at a critical moment when European nations are debating continued aid packages to Ukraine amid rising inflation and economic pressures. By linking domestic economic concerns directly to Ukraine support, these fabricated reports attempt to create a false choice between European prosperity and Ukrainian sovereignty.

Media analysts note that this campaign represents an evolution in Russia’s information warfare tactics. Rather than simply promoting alternative narratives through official Russian channels, these operations now focus on impersonating trusted Western voices to lend credibility to anti-Ukraine messaging.

“What makes these efforts particularly insidious is their sophistication,” explained Dr. Maria Kowalski, a disinformation researcher at the European Digital Rights Institute. “The production quality has improved dramatically, making it increasingly difficult for average citizens to distinguish between genuine reporting and fabricated content.”

The Center for Countering Disinformation also revealed that similar fake videos have targeted Ukrainian refugees, portraying them negatively to undermine public sympathy across Europe. This multi-pronged approach suggests a coordinated campaign to isolate Ukraine from its international supporters.

Digital forensics experts have identified several technical markers that can help identify these fabricated videos, including inconsistent graphics, unusual editing patterns, and distribution primarily through platforms known to amplify Russian propaganda.

This latest disinformation push follows earlier campaigns using artificial intelligence to generate videos purporting to show Ukrainian soldiers complaining about shortages of food, equipment, and support. These AI-generated videos, which began appearing on social media platforms several months ago, represented an early warning of Russia’s growing capabilities in creating convincing fake content.

European officials have called for increased vigilance among citizens when consuming media about Ukraine and have urged social media companies to improve their detection and removal of such deceptive content.

“The battle against disinformation requires both institutional responses and individual critical thinking,” noted a European Commission spokesperson. “Citizens should verify information through multiple trusted sources and be particularly wary of emotional content that seems designed to provoke outrage.”

As the conflict approaches its third year, experts warn that information warfare will continue to play a central role in Russia’s strategy to weaken international resolve in supporting Ukraine.
