Ukraine Accuses Russia of Information Manipulation and Interference in India’s Affairs

The Ukrainian Embassy in New Delhi has issued a strong statement accusing Russia of deliberate disinformation and attempting to interfere in India’s internal processes by fabricating claims about the detention of Ukrainian citizens in India.

In an official comment released Thursday, the embassy condemned remarks by the Russian foreign ministry, describing it as “Russia’s Ministry of Propaganda, which also masquerades as its Ministry of Foreign Affairs.” The statement alleged that Russian intelligence services had manufactured false information about supposed Ukrainian “terrorists” and passed it to Indian authorities.

“This bears all the hallmarks of a deliberate disinformation operation typical of the Russian special services, which systematically use fabrications as a tool of foreign policy and seek to draw India into a political script not of its own making,” the embassy statement read.

The Ukrainian embassy accused Moscow of operating under the “false assumption” that it can manipulate India to advance Russian geopolitical interests. They characterized this approach as “not merely mistaken” but “outright insulting” to India, describing the country as “a nation with a millennia-old civilizational tradition, a strong democratic system, and independent institutions.”

Highlighting India’s sovereignty, the embassy stated that the Indian judicial system “neither can nor will operate on the basis of external political instructions,” contrasting it with Russian courts like the Khamovnichesky and Lefortovsky district courts, which they claimed are “widely known for politically motivated verdicts.”

The embassy also referenced the International Criminal Court’s March 2023 arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over alleged war crimes, including the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian civilians. This reference appeared aimed at undermining Russia’s credibility in making accusations against others.

The statement further alleged that Russia continues to “export sabotage and terrorism” through networks of private military organizations operating globally. They specifically mentioned the Wagner Group, which was sanctioned by the European Union in 2021 for human rights abuses and regional destabilization activities across Ukraine and Africa.

Additionally, the embassy criticized Russia’s defense cooperation with Myanmar, noting that Moscow has supplied military equipment to the country despite United Nations resolutions condemning the military coup there and calling for an arms embargo. According to the embassy, Russia signed a military cooperation program with Myanmar for 2026-2030 and recently delivered Su-30SME fighter aircraft and Mi-38T helicopters to the regime.

The Ukrainian embassy’s statement contrasted Russia’s allegations with comments from Indian law enforcement. They cited Stephen Lalrinawma, Superintendent of Police, CID (Special Branch), Mizoram Police, who reportedly stated on March 18 that despite enhanced border surveillance, “no suspects had been intercepted” and no terror-related activity had been detected in Mizoram state.

“These statements are important because they do not substantiate the allegations being circulated and point to the absence, at this stage, of any established evidence to support them,” the embassy noted, suggesting that this undermined Russia’s claims.

The embassy concluded by expressing confidence in India’s legal system while cautioning against “unprecedented informational and political pressure from Russian special services and propaganda.” They called on Indian authorities “not to yield to provocations” and to ensure “an independent, impartial, and fair consideration of the case,” while affirming Ukraine’s readiness to cooperate in a transparent investigation.

This diplomatic exchange comes amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has now entered its third year, with both sides increasingly engaged in information warfare across global platforms as they seek international support and legitimacy for their positions.
