The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched a crackdown on the spread of disinformation regarding the country’s energy security amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, warning that those found responsible will face legal consequences.

PNP spokesperson Colonel Jean Fajardo Nartatez issued a stern warning against individuals attempting to exploit the Middle East crisis to create panic among Filipino citizens. “The situation in the Middle East is a serious matter and any attempt to exploit it to trigger unwarranted panic among our countrymen must be addressed and dealt with. We will not allow this,” Nartatez stated.

The police official emphasized that spreading false information about energy security, supply chains, and pricing could have significant negative impacts on communities and undermine public trust in government institutions at a critical time. Such misinformation could potentially trigger panic buying, price speculation, and unnecessary public anxiety.

In response to the growing concern, the PNP has mobilized its specialized Anti-Cybercrime Group to increase surveillance of digital platforms where disinformation campaigns are typically orchestrated. The cybercrime unit will monitor social media platforms, messaging apps, and websites for coordinated attempts to spread false narratives about the Philippines’ energy situation.

This initiative follows direct orders from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla, who have prioritized protecting the public from misleading information that could destabilize markets or create social unrest.

The Middle East conflict has raised legitimate concerns globally about potential disruptions to oil supply chains, as the region remains a critical source of petroleum products for many countries, including the Philippines. However, authorities maintain that the country’s energy supply remains stable, with contingency measures in place to address potential disruptions.

The Presidential Communications Office had previously issued warnings against spreading unverified claims related to energy security, emphasizing that such actions would be considered serious offenses with corresponding legal repercussions.

“We will go after and file charges against those behind the spread of false information,” Nartatez declared, signaling the government’s determination to prosecute individuals or groups deliberately sowing misinformation.

The police spokesperson also revealed that local police units throughout the country have been instructed to utilize their official social media channels to counter false narratives with factual information. This approach aims to provide citizens with accurate, timely updates about the national energy situation directly from authorized sources.

Energy security has become a particular concern for the Philippines, which imports approximately 90 percent of its oil requirements. The government has repeatedly assured the public that it maintains sufficient petroleum reserves and has diversified its supply sources to minimize the impact of regional conflicts on local markets.

Nartatez urged the public to practice due diligence when consuming and sharing information online, particularly during times of international tension. Citizens are encouraged to verify news through official government channels, reputable news organizations, and the verified social media accounts of relevant government agencies before sharing content with others.

The Philippines’ cybercrime laws provide a legal framework for prosecuting individuals who spread false information that could harm public welfare, with potential penalties including fines and imprisonment depending on the severity and impact of the misinformation.

As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, Philippine authorities remain vigilant against both external threats to energy security and internal threats of disinformation that could unnecessarily alarm the public or disrupt market stability.
