In a decisive move against what it calls a “coordinated surge” of false information, Malacañang Palace announced Thursday it has detected an organized disinformation campaign targeting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s health status and plans to pursue legal action against those responsible.

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Dave Gomez informed Palace reporters that false claims about the President’s health have intensified dramatically in recent days, with the misinformation allegedly penetrating even some traditional media outlets.

“The timing is suspect. Why the sudden surge at this time? Why resort to outright lies? Why the desperation? Regardless, the motive is clear — distract and destabilize our government,” Gomez stated, characterizing the situation as a “vicious attack” designed to undermine the administration’s governance.

The PCO is actively monitoring and documenting online content related to the alleged disinformation campaign. This includes social media posts and comments that will serve as evidence in potential court proceedings, according to Gomez.

Despite facing this wave of misinformation, the Palace maintains that President Marcos remains focused on addressing what officials describe as an ongoing “energy emergency” in the Philippines. Gomez emphasized that the President is prioritizing measures to mitigate rising energy costs and their impact on Filipino households and the broader economy.

“The President will not be distracted by this noise. The President remains laser-focused on one mission: solving our energy emergency and delivering real, tangible help to every Filipino family,” Gomez asserted.

The PCO confirmed earlier that it is preparing to file a formal complaint with the Department of Justice against individuals spreading false claims about the President’s health. Evidence is currently being gathered, with the case potentially being filed as early as next week, according to Gomez.

Palace officials have repeatedly emphasized that President Marcos remains in good health, attributing his noticeable weight loss to dietary adjustments following a previously disclosed diverticulitis diagnosis. Diverticulitis is a common digestive condition that affects the large intestine and often requires dietary modifications.

This situation unfolds against a backdrop of increasing concerns about disinformation in the Philippines, which has one of the highest social media usage rates in the world. Digital misinformation has become a significant political issue in recent years, with various political figures being targeted by coordinated campaigns.

The energy crisis that the administration is currently focused on addressing has put pressure on the government as Filipinos face rising electricity costs amid global energy market volatility. Energy security has become a central policy concern for the Marcos administration, which has been working to develop both short-term relief measures and long-term energy infrastructure solutions.

Legal experts note that the Philippines has several laws that can be applied to cases of malicious disinformation, including cybercrime legislation and provisions in the Revised Penal Code concerning libel and the spreading of “fake news” that could cause harm to public order.

The Palace’s strong reaction to the health rumors suggests the administration sees this as more than routine political criticism, but rather as a coordinated effort to undermine public confidence in the President’s capacity to govern during a period of economic challenge.

As this situation develops, observers will be watching closely to see what evidence the PCO presents in its complaint and how the Department of Justice responds to allegations of a coordinated disinformation campaign targeting the nation’s highest office.
