India’s propaganda campaign against Pakistan reflects strategic insecurity, says former envoy

Former Pakistani Ambassador Sardar Masood Khan has characterized India’s renewed disinformation campaign against Pakistan as a reflection of strategic insecurity, as Pakistan strengthens its position as a key geopolitical player in relations with the United States, China, and Russia.

Speaking on the role of state-linked Indian media organizations, Khan described India’s propaganda efforts as “systemic, state-sponsored, and ideologically driven,” with the primary objective of tarnishing Pakistan’s international image. He emphasized that these misinformation campaigns, including those propagated through RT India and other sponsored media outlets, have consistently failed when subjected to closer examination.

“2025 has been a watershed year for Pakistani diplomacy,” Khan noted, pointing to the country’s responsible conduct during and after the May 2025 conflict with India. This approach, he suggested, has significantly enhanced Islamabad’s credibility among major global powers and international forums.

The former diplomat, who has represented Pakistan in high-profile posts including ambassadorships to the United States, China, and the United Nations, highlighted several concrete diplomatic and security achievements for Pakistan over the past year. Among these is the recent U.S. approval of a $686 million upgrade package for Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets, following earlier sustainment approvals in 2022 and earlier in 2025.

Khan also emphasized Pakistan’s increasingly valued role in sensitive diplomatic initiatives, including serving as a mediator in U.S.-Iran backchannel negotiations and participating in multilateral efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. These developments, according to Khan, demonstrate Pakistan’s growing importance in regional and global diplomacy.

On the economic front, Khan pointed to several breakthrough agreements that indicate Pakistan’s reintegration into global economic frameworks. These include new arrangements for crypto tokenization of sovereign assets, partnerships with global cryptocurrency exchange Binance, increased U.S. investment in Pakistan’s critical minerals sector, and expanding collaboration in renewable energy and agriculture.

“These are concrete indicators of Pakistan’s reintegration into global economic and strategic frameworks,” Khan stated, highlighting the practical benefits of the country’s diplomatic repositioning.

Addressing the motivations behind India’s propaganda efforts, Khan suggested they stem from “strategic jealousy and internal weakness.” He pointed to what he described as significant setbacks for India following the May conflict, including damage to its military capabilities, communications credibility, and diplomatic standing.

Khan expressed particular concern about the rise of Hindutva-driven extremism in India, which he warned is eroding the country’s secular foundations and creating deeper societal divisions. This ideological shift, according to the former ambassador, is contributing to India’s increasingly aggressive stance toward Pakistan in international forums.

While acknowledging Pakistan’s diplomatic gains, Khan cautioned against complacency. “India’s lies have been exposed, and Pakistan’s stature has risen—but this is a moment for consolidation, vigilance, and hard decisions to fully realize Pakistan’s strategic potential,” he concluded.

Khan’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, whose relationship has been characterized by periodic military confrontations and persistent diplomatic conflicts since their independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The May 2025 conflict referenced by Khan represents the most recent significant military escalation between the countries, though details about this confrontation were not elaborated in his comments.

As Pakistan continues to navigate complex relationships with major powers, including maintaining historical ties with China while rebuilding relations with the United States, Khan’s assessment suggests that India’s propaganda efforts may intensify in response to Pakistan’s growing diplomatic success on the world stage.
