Indian authorities have uncovered a coordinated disinformation campaign originating from Pakistani sources that falsely claimed the resignation of India’s top air force official, according to a government statement released Thursday.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB), India’s official government communication agency, issued a fact-check alert debunking claims that Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh had resigned following the purported loss of seven Rafale fighter jets and one Tejas aircraft.
“Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a letter containing completely fabricated information about the IAF Chief’s resignation,” the PIB stated in its official communication. “These claims are entirely baseless and represent part of an ongoing disinformation campaign launched by Pakistan against India.”
The fabricated letter, which had been shared widely across social media platforms, contained what appeared to be an official statement from Air Chief Marshal Singh stating: “It has been the highest honour of my life to lead the Indian Air Force. However, recent circumstances have led me to conclude that I can no longer effectively discharge the duties of this office.”
Several Pakistani social media accounts promoted the document as “breaking news,” attempting to create the impression of serious operational failures within India’s air defense systems. The Rafale fighter jets, manufactured by French company Dassault Aviation, represent one of India’s most significant recent military acquisitions, with the country having purchased 36 aircraft in a deal worth approximately €7.8 billion.
The false claims about lost aircraft appeared designed to undermine confidence in India’s air defense capabilities and create doubt about its military readiness. The Tejas, India’s indigenously developed light combat aircraft, has been a symbol of the country’s push toward defense self-reliance, making it a particular target for disinformation.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of cross-border disinformation campaigns in South Asia, where historical tensions between India and Pakistan continue to manifest in the digital sphere. Military matters are particularly sensitive given the nuclear capabilities of both nations and their ongoing territorial disputes, especially regarding Kashmir.
The PIB has taken an increasingly active role in combating misinformation, regularly publishing fact-checks on government-related claims circulating on social media and messaging platforms. As part of its response to this incident, the agency shared a graphic clearly marking the circulated letter as “FAKE” and showing screenshots of social media posts spreading the fabricated document.
Security analysts note that disinformation campaigns targeting military leadership aim to create confusion and potentially influence public opinion during periods of regional tension. Similar tactics have been observed in various global conflict zones, with false claims about military casualties or leadership changes designed to affect morale and public support.
In its statement, the PIB urged citizens to exercise caution when encountering government-related information online. “We advise the public to avoid sharing unverified information and to rely solely on official Government of India sources for accurate updates,” the agency stated.
To assist in combating the spread of false information, the PIB has established dedicated channels for reporting suspicious content, including a WhatsApp number (+918799711259) and an email address (factcheck@pib.gov.in). The agency also encouraged social media users to tag its official fact-checking account (@PIBFactCheck) when encountering questionable material related to government affairs.
Neither the Indian Air Force nor Air Chief Marshal Singh have issued separate statements addressing the fabricated resignation letter, following standard protocol of allowing official government channels to address disinformation.
